Food safety during Hajj 1445: 29,000 inspection visits to serve pilgrims

As part of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's extensive efforts to serve pilgrims performing Hajj, the Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs and Housing, represented by the Holy Capital Municipality, announced the results of its health and food safety inspections during the 1445 AH Hajj season. More than 29,000 field inspections were conducted at catering kitchens and food establishments in Makkah and the Holy Sites to ensure the highest standards of safety and quality in the food provided to pilgrims.

General context: Crowd management and food safety during Hajj

The Hajj pilgrimage is the world's largest annual religious gathering, attracting millions of Muslims from around the globe. Managing this massive event presents a significant logistical challenge, and the Saudi Arabian government prioritizes the health and safety of pilgrims. Historically, the Kingdom has focused on developing its services for pilgrims, including health and food safety oversight, which has evolved considerably over the years through the introduction of modern technologies and intensified field campaigns to ensure a safe and healthy Hajj experience for all.

Details of the monitoring efforts for the Hajj season of 1445 AH

The ministry explained that its operational plan included testing more than 5,000 food samples in field and fixed laboratories to ensure their suitability for human consumption. The inspection tours covered a wide area, including central markets, storage facilities, catering centers, restaurants, and street vendors. These field campaigns aim to enhance compliance with health requirements and raise awareness among food establishment workers about the importance of implementing best health practices to ensure food safety.

The importance of the event and its local and international impact

These efforts are of paramount importance both locally and internationally. Locally, they contribute to maintaining public health and preventing the spread of any foodborne illnesses among pilgrims, citizens, and residents, thus enhancing confidence in government services. Internationally, the Kingdom's success in ensuring the safety of millions of pilgrims reflects its exceptional ability to manage crises and large gatherings, and sends a reassuring message to the Islamic world and the countries from which pilgrims come, affirming the Kingdom's commitment to providing a safe and comfortable environment for the guests of God to perform their rituals with ease and peace of mind. These efforts have resulted in no cases of food poisoning being recorded during the Hajj season to date, which is a significant success for the integrated monitoring system.

Advanced monitoring system

The ministry confirmed that the food safety monitoring system operated in the field through five mobile laboratories and 10 on-site testing devices, supported by approximately 40 equipped inspection vehicles. These capabilities enhanced the speed of food safety verification and immediate response to any issues in high-traffic areas, particularly those related to the movement of pilgrims between the holy sites, thus ensuring the continuous provision of high-quality services around the clock.
