Hajj in good health: Monitoring diabetic pilgrims with smart technologies 1445
Close monitoring of diabetic pilgrims using advanced technologies
In a pioneering step aimed at harnessing the latest technologies to serve pilgrims, Health Holding Company and its affiliated health clusters launched the “Hajj in Good Health” initiative for the 1445 AH Hajj season. This initiative includes close monitoring of pilgrims with diabetes through the installation of more than 3,000 smart digital sensors. This initiative, undertaken in partnership with Arab National Bank, aims to enhance pilgrim safety and provide proactive healthcare, aligning with the objectives of the Health Sector Transformation Program and Saudi Vision 2030, which seeks to improve the quality of services and facilitate access to them for pilgrims.
Historic efforts and a future vision for healthcare during Hajj
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has always placed great importance on the health and safety of pilgrims performing Hajj. Over the decades, the healthcare services provided to them have evolved from simple medical teams and field hospitals to a comprehensive, technology-enhanced healthcare system. The “Hajj in Good Health” initiative is a natural extension of these efforts, shifting healthcare from the traditional treatment-based approach to a modern one focused on prevention and continuous monitoring, especially for those with chronic illnesses whose health may be affected by the strenuous physical activity associated with performing the rituals in high temperatures.
How smart sensors work and their role in prevention
The initiative relies on the use of advanced digital sensors for continuous blood glucose (CGM) monitoring. These small sensors are attached to the bodies of the targeted pilgrims, measuring their blood sugar levels around the clock and wirelessly transmitting the data to a central monitoring platform overseen by specialized physicians. This technology allows the medical team to intervene quickly and immediately before any serious complications occur, such as episodes of severe hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia, thus reducing the need for emergency hospital visits and ensuring that pilgrims can perform their rituals with peace of mind and ease.
Impact of the initiative on the Hajj experience and the health system
The impact of this initiative extends beyond individual care to encompass the entire healthcare system. Locally, it contributes to raising the quality of healthcare services and embodies the digital transformation the Kingdom is striving for. Internationally, it reinforces Saudi Arabia's position as a leader in crowd management and the provision of innovative services during the world's largest religious gathering. It also offers a model that can be adopted globally for managing public health during major events. This year's campaign aims to benefit more than 160,000 pilgrims, building on the success of last year's campaign, which served 123,000 pilgrims and conducted over 224,000 medical examinations.
Integrated educational programs to support pilgrims
In addition to technical monitoring, the initiative included the implementation of specialized health education and training programs for participating pilgrims. These programs focused on vital aspects such as proper nutrition during Hajj, the importance of medication adherence, and how to engage in physical activity safely. This integrated approach aims to empower pilgrims to effectively manage their health, raise their health awareness, and promote safe behaviors to ensure a healthy and safe Hajj experience in all respects.
