Hajj Operations Center: Smart systems for crowd management and serving pilgrims
Introduction: A historical development in serving the guests of God
Over the decades, Saudi Arabia has witnessed radical transformations in the management and organization of the Hajj season. Since the unification of the Kingdom, the wise leadership has placed serving the pilgrims at the forefront of its priorities. With rapid technological advancements and the launch of Saudi Vision 2030, crowd management has shifted from traditional methods to a complete reliance on artificial intelligence and big data, making the Kingdom a global model to be emulated in managing gatherings of millions of people in limited geographical areas and specific timeframes.
Hajj Operations Center: The technological nerve center for crowd management
In this context, the official spokesperson for the Hajj Operations , Command and Control Center, Lieutenant Colonel Saud Al-Humaidani, confirmed in a statement to Al-Youm newspaper that the center operates according to a comprehensive and advanced operational model. This model relies primarily on precise monitoring, continuous follow-up, and real-time coordination between various security sectors and partner agencies. These joint efforts aim to enhance the smooth flow of pilgrims within the holy sites and improve crowd management efficiency during the Hajj season to ensure the safety and security of all.
Lieutenant Colonel Al-Humaidani explained that the Hajj Operations Center boasts an exceptional level of integration and coordination among all security agencies and companies operating within it. He noted that the operational system relies on the latest smart systems and modern technologies, enabling rapid decision-making and providing immediate and effective support for field operations.
Strategic partnerships and advanced digital platforms
To achieve the highest standards of accuracy, Al-Humaidani explained that the center works in close strategic partnership with the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA) and King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology. This partnership results in the operation of several advanced digital platforms that provide accurate and real-time indicators of crowd movement and human density in various vital locations within Mecca and the Holy Sites.
Among the most prominent of these technologies are systems for measuring human density from the entrances to Mecca to the central area. Also noteworthy is the smart "Baseer" platform, which monitors crowd movement within the Grand Mosque, measures density distribution at the mosque's gates, and tracks occupancy rates in the circumambulation area (Mataf), the various levels, and the roof of the circumambulation area. These platforms provide television monitoring supervisors with precise indicators that contribute to making crucial field decisions and issuing direct instructions to field commanders to ensure the safety of pilgrims.
Continuous technological updates and global impact
The efforts didn't stop there. Al-Humaidani pointed out that the technical systems are undergoing continuous updates. The system includes advanced thermal cameras in Arafat, used to accurately detect infiltrators and support security efforts. The "Ru'ya" platform was also launched in cooperation with King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology to measure temperatures, identify the hottest locations, and monitor vehicles in uninhabited areas in coordination with aerial surveillance.
The profound significance of this technological advancement extends far beyond the local level, reaching a broad regional and international impact. The Kingdom's success in securing millions of pilgrims arriving from all corners of the earth enhances its Islamic and international standing and presents the world with a unique case study in how technology can be employed to protect lives and facilitate the performance of rituals. All these technical and organizational efforts fall within the framework of harnessing modern capabilities to serve the guests of God and achieve the highest levels of security, safety, and organization during their movements and performance of the Hajj rites.
