Pilgrims throw stones at the Jamarat al-Aqaba: Security and complete organization
In a majestic scene embodying the highest ideals of faith and meticulous organization, pilgrims began the ritual of stoning the Jamarat al-Aqaba (the largest of the three pillars) in Mina today, the first day of Eid al-Adha. This great pillar of Hajj is being performed in an atmosphere of security and tranquility, thanks to the concerted efforts of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to ensure the comfort and safety of the pilgrims.
The historical and spiritual context of the stoning of the Jamarat:
The stoning of the Jamarat is a fundamental ritual of Hajj, symbolizing the stoning of Satan and the rejection of his temptations, following the example of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) when Satan tempted him three times to dissuade him from carrying out God's command to sacrifice his son Ismail. Each time, Ibrahim stoned Satan. This ritual begins with the stoning of the Jamarat al-Aqaba (the largest of the three pillars) on the 10th of Dhul-Hijjah, which coincides with the first day of Eid al-Adha. This is followed by the stoning of the Jamarat al-Sughra (the middle pillar) and Jamarat al-Wusta (the largest pillar) during the three days of Tashreeq. This symbolic act represents a renewal of the covenant with God and a purification from evil and sin, and it culminates an important stage of the Hajj journey after standing at Arafat and spending the night at Muzdalifah.
The pilgrims' journey from Arafat to Mina:
Pilgrims had arrived at Muzdalifah from the sacred plains of Arafat after spending the Day of Arafah, the most important pillar of Hajj. In Muzdalifah, they collected pebbles for the stoning ritual. The pilgrims spent the night in Muzdalifah in remembrance of God, supplication, and recitation of the Holy Quran, making the most of these blessed times to draw closer to Him. With the dawn of Eid al-Adha, the pilgrim caravans began their journey towards Mina, where the stoning ritual is located, in a smooth and organized movement that reflects the tremendous efforts made in crowd management.
The efforts of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in managing the Hajj:
The brilliance of the organization is evident in the management of the millions of pilgrims performing this ritual. The relevant authorities in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia dedicated all their human and technological resources to serving the pilgrims. Pedestrian routes and transportation flowed smoothly thanks to meticulous planning and execution. Advanced infrastructure was provided, most notably the multi-level Jamarat Bridge, designed to accommodate massive numbers of pilgrims and facilitate the stoning ritual safely and easily, thus reducing congestion and preventing stampedes. Security, medical, and ambulance teams were also deployed along the routes and around the Jamarat to provide immediate support when needed.
Importance and impact:
- On a spiritual level: The stoning of the Jamarat represents a pivotal moment in the pilgrim's journey, as the pilgrim feels liberated from the constraints of the world and closer to the Creator, which strengthens faith and renews the determination to obey.
- On the organizational and administrative level: The success of the Hajj season year after year demonstrates the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s superior ability to manage the largest human gathering in the world efficiently and competently, thus enhancing its position as the custodian of the Two Holy Mosques.
- At the regional and international levels, the Hajj attracts widespread global attention, reflecting a positive image of Islam and Muslims, and highlighting the Kingdom's leading role in serving Islam and Muslims worldwide. This annual event also strengthens ties between Muslim peoples and embodies their unity in performing a single religious duty.
This atmosphere of faith, characterized by tranquility and reverence, continues as the pilgrims continue to perform the rest of their rituals, emphasizing that security and peace of mind are the two essential pillars for an easy and acceptable Hajj journey.
