Hajj season preparations: 66 centers to be operational in the holy sites
Introduction to Hajj Season Preparations
As part of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's ongoing efforts to provide the best possible services to pilgrims, the Ministry of Municipalities and Housing announced the completion of its field services system in the Holy Sites. These efforts are part of the comprehensive operational plan for the 1447 AH Hajj season, which aims to provide a safe and comfortable environment for pilgrims through an integrated system that enhances response times and operational efficiency in high-density areas.
The historical context of serving the guests of God
Historically, since its unification, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has given great attention and special care to the development of the Holy Sites. The Hajj pilgrimage has transformed over the past decades from a perilous and arduous journey into a more accessible and spiritually enriching experience, thanks to massive investments in infrastructure. With the increasing number of pilgrims each year, the wise leadership has been keen to harness all available technological, human, and material resources, transitioning from traditional services to smart city management, reflecting a deep-rooted historical and religious commitment to serving Islam and Muslims.
Details of the operational plan and field services
The ministry explained that this year's plan included operating 66 service centers, 28 of which are strategic centers within the Holy Sites. These centers serve as field support and operational hubs, directly contributing to enhancing service continuity and expediting responses to field reports and observations around the clock. Preparations included upgrading public facilities, operational headquarters, and logistical support sites to ensure the highest level of readiness for field teams at various vital locations.
Furthermore, the engineering works included the construction and equipping of 20 pedestrian bridges and 18 tunnels, along with the development of roads and squares surrounding the traffic routes. These facilities effectively contribute to facilitating the smooth movement of millions of people and improving the efficiency of pedestrian and vehicular traffic flow during the Hajj season.
Infrastructure and lighting system development
As part of its operational plans for the 1447 AH Hajj season, the Ministry implemented massive projects that included the maintenance and development of over 11 million linear meters of roads and the remediation of approximately 74 million square meters of road surfaces. The readiness of 123 bridges and 44 pedestrian and vehicular tunnels was also enhanced, and an additional 62 tunnels were prepared within the transportation and movement system in the Holy Sites. To ensure the safety and security of pilgrims at night, more than 330,000 lighting units and 150,000 light poles were activated in Makkah and the Holy Sites.
The municipal volunteer system and the importance of community participation
The Ministry did not overlook the humanitarian and social aspects, as it, through its regional secretariats, mobilized more than 4,500 male and female volunteers within the municipal volunteer system. These volunteers participate in serving pilgrims at vital locations, entry points, and roads leading to the holy sites, providing significant support to operational and service efforts and reflecting the values of generosity and hospitality deeply rooted in Saudi society.
The importance and expected impact of the event
The success of the Hajj season is of paramount importance and has a multifaceted impact. Domestically, these massive preparations contribute to revitalizing the national economy, creating thousands of seasonal jobs, and sustainably developing the infrastructure of Makkah. Regionally and internationally, the exceptional organization of the millions of pilgrims reinforces the Kingdom's position as a leading power in crowd and crisis management, and highlights its positive image as the custodian of the Two Holy Mosques. These efforts are also directly aligned with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030, which aims to increase the capacity to receive pilgrims, facilitate their arrival, and provide world-class services befitting the Kingdom's Islamic stature.
