Two Holy Mosques Affairs: 1000 smart signs with NFC technology to measure pilgrim satisfaction
Digital transformation in serving the pilgrims
The General Authority for the Care of the Two Holy Mosques announced the launch of a sophisticated suite of smart technological solutions aimed at measuring the satisfaction of pilgrims with the services provided at the Two Holy Mosques. This innovative initiative, which includes the deployment of 1,000 smart signs, is part of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's ongoing efforts to utilize the latest technologies to serve pilgrims, Umrah performers, and visitors, and to enhance their spiritual and service-related experience.
Historical context and future vision
Since its founding, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has always prioritized serving the Two Holy Mosques and their visitors. Over the decades, the Two Holy Mosques have undergone massive expansions and continuous development projects to accommodate the growing number of Muslims from around the world. With the launch of Vision 2030, these efforts have entered a new era focused on digital transformation and innovation. The Guests of God Service Program, one of the Vision's key initiatives, aims to revolutionize the Hajj and Umrah experience, making it more convenient and comfortable. This technological initiative is a practical and tangible step towards achieving the goals of "Smart Hajj," which leverages technology to enhance the efficiency of field operations and respond to visitors' needs immediately.
How smart signage works and its impact
The project relies on creating a sophisticated technological control panel to manage 1,000 acrylic signs, each equipped with a Near Field Communication (NFC) chip. This technology allows pilgrims to instantly access a digital survey to evaluate the services provided at that specific location simply by scanning their smartphones with the sign. These signs have been strategically distributed—650 in the Grand Mosque and 350 in the Prophet's Mosque—to cover key service points such as the circumambulation and Sa'i areas, Zamzam water distribution points, prayer areas, and restrooms. This system enables the real-time collection and analysis of data, providing decision-makers with precise performance indicators on the quality of field services and helping them identify strengths and opportunities for improvement directly and quickly.
Importance and expected impact
Domestically, this initiative represents a shift from traditional measurement methods to a real-time, data-driven approach, enhancing the Authority's ability to make informed and rapid decisions to improve services and address any emerging challenges. Internationally, this project reinforces the Kingdom's position as a leader in managing large crowds and religious gatherings, setting a benchmark for leveraging technology to serve holy sites. It also sends a positive message to millions of Muslims worldwide, underscoring the Kingdom's commitment to providing the highest levels of service to ensure their comfort and safety. Providing a direct and effective digital communication channel deepens the visitor's sense of being valued and makes them a partner in the ongoing development process, perfectly aligned with the goals of the Kingdom's Vision 2030 to deliver an unforgettable spiritual and service-oriented experience for pilgrims.
