Haramain High-Speed Railway: World-class technologies to serve pilgrims during Hajj season
The Haramain High-Speed Railway project in Medina and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia as a whole represents a qualitative leap and a cornerstone of the integrated transportation and logistics system designed to serve pilgrims performing Hajj and Umrah. With the peak of the Hajj season approaching, work is intensifying at its stations to provide a safe and reliable travel experience, utilizing the latest global technologies in high-speed rail.
Historical background and strategic context within Vision 2030
The Haramain High-Speed Railway project was not a coincidence; rather, it is one of the most important strategic projects stemming from the Kingdom's Vision 2030, which aims to increase the capacity to accommodate pilgrims and facilitate their spiritual journey. The project was officially launched in September 2018, connecting the two holy cities of Mecca and Medina via a 450-kilometer electrified railway line. The train also passes through three other main stations: Jeddah's Sulaimaniyah station, King Abdulaziz International Airport station, and King Abdullah Economic City station, creating an integrated transportation network that serves passengers with high efficiency.
The importance of the project and its impact on the Hajj experience
The Haramain High-Speed Railway's significance lies in its direct impact on enhancing the pilgrim experience from the moment they arrive in the Kingdom. Its direct connection to King Abdulaziz International Airport allows pilgrims arriving by air to travel easily and quickly to Makkah or Madinah. Locally and regionally, the project contributes to alleviating traffic congestion on highways between the holy cities, especially during peak seasons, thus reducing travel time and enhancing safety and comfort. Internationally, the project reflects the Kingdom's modern image and its ability to utilize cutting-edge technologies to serve millions of Muslims from around the world.
Maximum operational readiness for the Hajj season
Saudi Railways (SAR) has announced its operational plan for this year's Hajj season, reflecting its full readiness to handle the increasing number of pilgrims. The company's official spokesperson, Khalid bin Yousef Al-Farhan, explained that the plan includes operating more than 5,300 train trips, providing over 2.21 million seats. The Haramain High-Speed Railway fleet consists of 35 trains, each with a capacity of 417 seats, and is designed to operate at speeds of up to 300 kilometers per hour, making it one of the fastest trains in the world. This performance reduces travel time between Mecca and Medina to approximately two hours and 15 minutes.
Logistical integration and high volume of flights
The Haramain High-Speed Railway station in Madinah is currently experiencing peak operational demand as pilgrims arrive in the city of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and depart for Makkah to perform Hajj. To meet this high demand, the number of daily trips during peak times will exceed 140, with a train arriving or departing from Madinah station every 25 to 30 minutes. This organized operational integration is part of the Kingdom's ongoing efforts within its transportation and logistics system to provide safe, fast, and highly efficient transportation options that accommodate the significant increase in the number of pilgrims each year.
