The Haramain High-Speed Railway provides 2.21 million seats for the Hajj season

An exceptional plan to serve the pilgrims

Saudi Railways (SAR) announced the completion of its preparations for this year's Hajj season, unveiling a massive operational plan for the Haramain High-Speed Railway aimed at serving pilgrims. The plan includes providing over 2.21 million seats, which will be made available through more than 5,300 train trips between the 1st of Dhu al-Qi'dah and the 20th of Dhu al-Hijjah. These figures represent a significant increase of over 210,000 seats compared to the same period last year, reflecting ongoing efforts to enhance services for pilgrims.

Project background and strategic importance

The Haramain High-Speed Railway is one of the largest infrastructure projects in the Middle East and a key component of Saudi Vision 2030 and the Hajj and Umrah Program. Officially launched in 2018, the project aims to revolutionize transportation between the holy cities of Mecca and Medina, passing through Jeddah and King Abdullah Economic City. Historically, pilgrims traveling between these cities relied primarily on buses and cars, resulting in time-consuming journeys and increased road congestion. The Haramain High-Speed Railway offers a safe, fast, and comfortable solution, reducing travel time between Mecca and Medina to approximately two hours and twenty minutes, with an operating speed of up to 300 kilometers per hour.

Local and regional impact of the Haramain High-Speed Railway project

The impact of the Haramain High-Speed Railway extends far beyond mere transportation. Domestically, the project has dramatically improved the Hajj and Umrah experience, offering pilgrims a modern option that ensures comfort and safety, allowing them to better dedicate their time to worship. It also plays a vital role in easing pressure on the road network, reducing traffic congestion and carbon emissions. Regionally and internationally, the project showcases the Kingdom's ability to manage massive crowds and provide advanced logistics services, reinforcing its position as a leading global religious destination. The railway connects five main stations designed to the highest international standards: Makkah Station, Madinah Station, King Abdulaziz International Airport Station in Jeddah, Jeddah Main Station (Sulaimaniyah), and King Abdullah Economic City Station, making it a vital artery linking the most important air gateways to the holy cities.

Global specifications and technologies

The Haramain High-Speed Railway operates with a fleet of 35 electric trains, each with a capacity of 417 passengers distributed across 13 carriages. The trains are equipped with the latest amenities and technology, featuring business and economy class seating, as well as a dedicated dining area. They also include entertainment screens and support services for passengers with disabilities, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable travel experience for all. The train station at King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah is the largest airport-connected railway station in the world, facilitating direct transfers for pilgrims arriving by air to Makkah or Madinah without leaving the airport.
