Health Ministry: Meningococcal vaccine is a requirement for Umrah... Appointment and booking method

The Saudi Ministry of Health has reiterated its call for all those wishing to perform Umrah and visit the Holy Mosque in Mecca to get vaccinated against meningococcal meningitis, emphasizing that this step is essential for maintaining public health and the safety of pilgrims. These directives are part of the Kingdom's ongoing efforts to provide a safe and healthy environment free from epidemics, especially given the large gatherings of people at the holy sites.
The importance of vaccination and the risks of infection in crowded places
The Ministry explained that being in crowded places, such as the circumambulation area (Mataf) and the Sa'i area (between Safa and Marwa), can increase the chances of transmitting infectious diseases spread through respiratory droplets. Meningitis is a serious disease that targets the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord, making its prevention a top priority. Medical sources indicated that vaccination not only protects the individual but also contributes to strengthening community immunity and preventing the spread of infection among pilgrims coming from different countries around the world, reflecting the Kingdom's leading role in regional and international health security.
Optimal timing: Why 10 days before traveling?
The Ministry emphasized the importance of timing in receiving the vaccine, recommending that it be administered at least 10 days before traveling to the holy sites. The medical reason for this timeframe is that the human immune system needs this period to build sufficient antibodies to fight the bacteria causing the disease. The Ministry affirmed that adhering to this timeframe ensures the vaccine's effectiveness and provides the highest level of protection for pilgrims during the Hajj rituals.
Vaccine validity and booking steps via "Sehhaty"
Regarding the vaccine's validity, the ministry clarified that the meningococcal vaccine provides long-term protection for up to five years. Therefore, individuals who have received the vaccine within the past five years do not need a booster dose, as their bodies retain the necessary immunity.
To facilitate procedures for citizens and residents, the Ministry of Health has made it possible to book appointments electronically and free of charge through the "Sehhaty" application. Users can follow these steps:
- Access the "My Health" app.
- Select the "Appointments" service.
- Book an appointment at the "Adult Vaccination Clinic" (Meningococcal Vaccination).
- Go to the health center at the scheduled time.
These measures come under the slogan "Your health is our priority" to ensure that pilgrims perform their rituals with ease and peace of mind, while reducing health risks to their lowest levels.
