The Minister of Health inspects the readiness of the health system for Hajj

Exceptional preparations to serve the guests of God

Each year, the Hajj season stands as one of the largest and most complex human gatherings on Earth, requiring meticulous strategic planning to ensure the safety of millions of pilgrims. In this context, the Minister of Health, Mr. Fahd bin Abdulrahman Al-Jalajel, inspected the readiness of the healthcare system dedicated to serving the pilgrims during the Hajj season as part of his extensive field visits. These visits aim to ensure the complete preparedness of healthcare services and their delivery at the highest standards of efficiency and quality, in line with the objectives of the "Health Sector Transformation Program" and the "Pilgrims Service Program," both of which are key pillars of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030, enabling pilgrims to perform their rituals in complete health and peace of mind.

A proven track record in crowd medicine management

Historically, Saudi Arabia possesses decades of accumulated experience in mass gathering health management, a medical specialty in which the Kingdom has become a global leader. The challenge of providing immediate medical care to millions of people within a limited geographical area and a short timeframe has driven the Saudi healthcare system to adopt cutting-edge technological innovations to overcome logistical obstacles, such as traffic congestion and the difficulty of navigating the holy sites. This has significantly enhanced the Kingdom's international reputation in managing crises and large gatherings.

Technological innovations: Drones and smart surveillance

During the inspection tour, His Excellency the Minister of Health participated in a presentation by several entities within the healthcare system showcasing their latest technologies. The National Unified Procurement Company for Medicines, Medical Devices, and Supplies (NUPCO) highlighted a number of pioneering innovations, most notably the use of drones for rapid medical supply. This innovative approach ensures the swift delivery of vital medicines to field hospitals, overcoming all ground obstacles. The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) also presented its inspection vehicles and equipment, which are equipped with advanced refrigerators for preserving samples. Furthermore, the SFDA highlighted the provision of body cameras to inspectors to guarantee the highest levels of transparency and oversight of food and medicine provided to pilgrims.

Ambulance fleet: diversity and rapid response

For its part, Health Holding Company presented its advanced technological systems for managing the ambulance fleet and medical triage, which included electric ambulance bikes designed to expedite the movement of medical personnel through crowds. In a related context, the Saudi Red Crescent Authority reviewed its extensive operational plan for this year, which relies on a formidable fleet of more than 3,000 diverse ambulance vehicles. This fleet includes rapid intervention vehicles, electric golf carts, motorcycles, bicycles, and ambulance scooters, in addition to 11 air ambulances within its air support system dedicated to the rapid transport of critical cases to specialized hospitals.

Innovative solutions for crowded areas

To ensure coverage of all locations, especially pedestrian walkways and densely populated areas difficult for conventional ambulances to access, specialized vehicles such as air-conditioned electric golf carts were showcased. Also highlighted were the “Rafida” electric ambulance chairs, an innovative solution that facilitates rapid access to emergency cases within high-traffic areas, enabling direct and effective provision of primary care. This integration of qualified personnel and advanced technologies reflects the Kingdom’s unwavering commitment to providing exceptional healthcare befitting the pilgrims.
