The tallest flagpole for the Saudi flag in Mecca, standing at 80 meters high, has been erected

In a pioneering national step reflecting pride in Saudi identity, the Holy Capital Municipality completed the installation of the tallest Saudi flagpole in Mecca, exceeding 80 meters in height. This prominent national landmark is located on Prince Mohammed bin Salman Road in the Al-Shumaisi district, and its inauguration coincided with the Kingdom's celebrations of "Saudi Flag Day," which falls on March 11th each year.

The historical context and significance of Saudi Flag Day

Saudi Flag Day holds immense historical significance, as March 11th was chosen to commemorate the day in 1937 (corresponding to 27 Dhu al-Hijjah 1355 AH) when the Kingdom's founder, King Abdulaziz Al Saud, approved the flag in its current form. A royal decree issued by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, in 2023 designated this day to celebrate the national flag. The Saudi flag is distinguished by its unique characteristics; it is the only flag in the world that is never flown at half-mast, even during times of mourning, in reverence for the declaration of faith (There is no god but God, Muhammad is the Messenger of God) inscribed upon it. Its green color symbolizes growth, prosperity, and peace, while the drawn sword beneath it represents strength, justice, and the firmness required to uphold the truth and defend the nation's sacred values.

The event's impact and its local and international significance

This step is of exceptional importance given Mecca's status as the Qibla for Muslims and a destination for millions of pilgrims and Umrah performers annually. Placing the tallest flagpole of the Saudi flag at the entrance to the Holy City (Al-Shumaisi Road) makes this flag a majestic visual landmark welcoming visitors from all over the world, reflecting the Kingdom's message of unity and peace. Domestically, this project contributes to strengthening national identity and deepening the bond between the leadership and the people, which aligns directly with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030 that emphasize the importance of promoting national character and pride in heritage and cultural legacy.

Cultural and interactive events in Mecca

In conjunction with this engineering and national achievement, the Holy Capital Municipality organized a major national event entitled “A Flag Carrying the Message of Unity and the History of a Nation” in the Makkah Yard area. This event included a range of cultural and national activities highlighting the symbolism of the flag and its historical significance. The event featured a specialized dialogue session entitled “The History of the Saudi Flag and Its Significance,” which reviewed the historical stages of the Kingdom’s flag’s development since the founding of the First Saudi State, and the enduring meanings it embodies, symbolizing pride and dignity.

Highlighting national heritage and promoting awareness

The events were not limited to storytelling; they also included interactive activities and accompanying programs targeting all segments of society, including citizens, residents, and visitors. These efforts, spearheaded by the Holy Capital Municipality, aim to revitalize cultural and social activity in Mecca, offering high-quality programs that enrich the visitor experience and showcase the national heritage using modern educational methods. Instilling values of belonging and pride in national symbols is a fundamental pillar in building conscious generations who appreciate the nation's achievements and glorious history.
