Islamic Alliance and Nigeria: Strategic talks to combat terrorism

As part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the collective security system among Islamic countries, the Secretary-General of the Islamic Military Counter Terrorism Coalition, Major General Pilot Staff Officer Mohammed bin Saeed Al-Moghedi, received today at the Coalition’s headquarters in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, the Military Attaché of the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the Kingdom, Brigadier General Kabir Imam, and his accompanying delegation.

Details of the bilateral talks

The meeting included extensive discussions on ways to develop and strengthen cooperation between the Alliance and the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The discussions focused on mechanisms for combating terrorism and violent extremism, with particular emphasis on capacity building and the exchange of expertise in the vital areas upon which the Alliance's work is based: military, intellectual, media, and counter-terrorism financing. These discussions aim to support the efforts of member states in maintaining their national security and stability.

The importance of Nigeria's role in the alliance

During the meeting, Major General Al-Mughaidi commended the pivotal and active role played by the Federal Republic of Nigeria within the coalition. He emphasized the coalition leadership's commitment to expanding the strategic partnership and ongoing coordination with Nigeria, in line with the coalition's strategic objectives of eradicating terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, and eliminating its root causes.

The context of joint work and the importance of timing

This visit comes at a crucial time, as West Africa faces escalating security challenges that necessitate concerted international and regional efforts. Nigeria is a cornerstone of stability on the African continent, making cooperation with it within the framework of the Islamic Military Counter Terrorism Coalition a strategic step for exchanging intelligence and field expertise in combating extremist groups.

It is worth noting that the Islamic Military Counter Terrorism Coalition, which was established at the initiative of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, includes 42 member states, and operates according to a comprehensive mechanism that is not limited to military solutions only, but extends to addressing the intellectual roots of extremism, refuting terrorist discourse in the media, and combating its financing, which makes it a unique platform in joint international action.

Appreciation for the efforts made

For his part, the Nigerian military attaché expressed his deep appreciation for the significant efforts undertaken by the Islamic Military Alliance, praising its high-quality programs and initiatives aimed at enhancing the combat and intellectual readiness of member states. Brigadier General Kabir Imam emphasized the importance of continuing this pattern of cooperation and joint coordination to address current security challenges that threaten international peace.

This meeting is part of a series of periodic meetings held by the coalition with military attachés and representatives of member states, in an effort to consolidate the approach of collective action and unify visions in the ongoing battle against terrorism.
