Agreement between the Ministry of Interior and ZATCA to enhance the security and efficiency of land border crossings
Strategic partnership to enhance the security and efficiency of Saudi land ports
In a move aimed at enhancing integration among government agencies and improving operational efficiency at vital border crossings, the Saudi Ministry of Interior and the Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority (ZATCA) signed a joint cooperation agreement. The signing ceremony took place at ZATCA headquarters. This partnership aims to unify efforts, coordinate joint tasks at the Kingdom's land ports, and exchange expertise to serve national objectives.
The agreement was signed on behalf of the Ministry of Interior by His Excellency the Assistant Minister of Interior, Dr. Hisham bin Abdulrahman Al-Falih, and on behalf of the ZATCA Authority by its Governor, Engineer Suhail bin Mohammed Abanmi. This cooperation reinforces the principle of integrated work between two vital sectors, with the Ministry of Interior responsible for security matters and the movement of people, while ZATCA specializes in customs procedures, the flow of goods, and the security of imports and exports.
General context and importance of the Kingdom's land ports
Saudi Arabia's land borders are vital economic and security arteries, serving as the primary gateway for trade with neighboring countries such as Jordan, Iraq, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, the UAE, Oman, and Yemen. These borders play a pivotal role in facilitating the movement of goods and travelers, in addition to their crucial function in receiving pilgrims and Umrah performers arriving by land.
This agreement comes as part of the Kingdom's ongoing efforts to develop its logistics infrastructure, in line with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030, which aims to transform the Kingdom into a global logistics hub connecting three continents. Achieving this objective requires advanced infrastructure and efficient, fast, and secure border procedures, which this agreement seeks to achieve through close coordination between the Ministry of Interior and ZATCA.
Expected effects of the agreement on various levels
This agreement is expected to have tangible positive impacts at both the local and regional levels. Locally, enhanced cooperation will expedite customs and security procedures, reducing waiting times for trucks and travelers and facilitating trade. It will also contribute to increased security by strengthening mechanisms to combat smuggling in all its forms, including drugs, counterfeit goods, and other prohibited items, thus protecting society and the national economy.
Regionally, this coordination strengthens the Kingdom's position as a reliable trading partner, as the smooth flow of goods across its borders positively impacts the economies of neighboring countries. Internationally, improving the efficiency of land border crossings supports global supply chains and makes the Kingdom a more attractive destination for foreign investment in the industrial and logistics sectors. In short, this agreement represents a cornerstone in building a modern and integrated border system that supports national security and contributes to achieving sustainable economic development.
