International condemnation of the video showing the restraint of activists on the Gaza-bound flotilla
A video posted by Israel's far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir sparked international condemnation and outrage. The video showed international activists from the Freedom Flotilla being held in a humiliating manner, with some kneeling, their hands tied behind their backs, and their heads turned towards the ground.
The video documents the escorting of dozens of activists onto a military vessel, then their transfer to an Israeli detention center. In a provocative scene, Ben-Gvir is seen waving an Israeli flag in front of one of the handcuffed activists, and he also thanked the occupation forces after they violently pushed a female activist to the ground for chanting, “Freedom, freedom for Palestine,” as she passed by.

Historical context: The siege of Gaza and efforts to break it
This incident comes amid a crippling Israeli blockade of the Gaza Strip, imposed since 2007, which has led to an unprecedented humanitarian crisis. Over the years, international solidarity movements have organized several maritime voyages to break this blockade, most notably the 2010 Freedom Flotilla, which was attacked, triggering a global diplomatic crisis. The Global Steadfastness Flotilla set sail last week as the latest attempt by activists to break the blockade on the Palestinian territory, following the interception of a similar convoy by Israeli forces last month.
The French ambassador was summoned, and diplomatic tensions escalated
European diplomatic responses were swift, with France announcing on Wednesday that it had summoned the Israeli ambassador in Paris. This move came in protest against what it described as the “unacceptable” actions of the extremist minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, who posted the video. In this context, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot wrote in a post on the “X” platform: “I have requested that the Israeli ambassador in France be summoned to express our condemnation and to obtain clarifications.”.
Italy condemns the move and demands a formal apology
Similarly, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni condemned Israel's treatment of the detained Gaza flotilla activists, deeming it "unacceptable," following the release of the video. Meloni demanded the immediate release of any detained Italian citizens and a formal apology from Israel.
“It is unacceptable that these detainees, many of whom are Italian citizens, should be subjected to such degrading treatment,” Meloni said in an official statement, referring to the video posted by Ben-Gvir. She added firmly, “Italy also demands an apology for the treatment of these detainees and for the complete disregard of the Italian government’s explicit demands.”.
The expected impact of the event regionally and internationally
This event has significant repercussions on several levels. Internationally, it deepens the diplomatic rift between Israel and its European allies, further isolating the right-wing government politically. Regionally, it underscores the urgent need for a lasting solution to the Gaza blockade and intensifies public and media pressure on the international community to intervene to protect humanitarian aid convoys and peaceful activists.
