Iran-US negotiations: Tehran is considering new proposals
New developments in the course of negotiations between Iran and the United States
In a notable diplomatic move, the Islamic Republic of Iran announced that it is currently studying “new” American proposals received through Pakistani diplomatic channels. These developments come within the framework of intensive mediation efforts led by Islamabad between Tehran and Washington, aimed at reaching fundamental solutions and putting a definitive end to the escalating tensions and ongoing wars in the Middle East region.
Behind the scenes of the Pakistani mediation
In a statement detailing the events, the Secretariat of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, carried by the official Iranian news agency IRNA, issued an official statement clarifying the behind-the-scenes aspects of this mediation. The statement confirmed that during the past few days, in the context of an official visit by Pakistani Army Chief General Asim Munir to Tehran as a mediator in the negotiations, a new set of proposals was presented by the US administration. The statement indicated that the Iranian leadership is currently considering these proposals seriously and has not yet issued any official response.
The historical context of indirect relations
Historically, relations between the United States and Iran have not been direct since the severing of diplomatic ties following the Islamic Revolution in 1979. Since then, the two countries have relied on international and regional intermediaries to convey messages, such as Switzerland, which represents US interests in Tehran, as well as Oman and Qatar. Pakistan's current mediation adds an important regional dimension, especially given its long land border with Iran and its strategic relationship with the United States. The negotiations between Iran and the US by a number of historical factors, most notably the US withdrawal from the nuclear agreement in 2018, which was followed by the imposition of harsh economic sanctions on Tehran.
The importance of the event and its regional and international impact
These proposals are of paramount importance given the complex geopolitical circumstances in the Middle East. Regionally, international actors are striving to prevent the conflict from escalating, particularly as tensions persist and directly impact international shipping in critical waterways like the Strait of Hormuz. Internationally, the success of these negotiations could lead to greater stability in global energy markets and a reduction in international polarization.
Diplomatic caution and avoiding escalation
In a related development, Iranian official Saeed Khatibzadeh stated on the sidelines of the Antalya Diplomacy Forum that no precise date has yet been set for the next round of negotiations between the two sides, following the failure of the first round. Khatibzadeh emphasized to reporters Tehran's commitment to caution, saying, "We cannot set a date until we agree on the basic framework.".
He added, emphasizing the Iranian position: “We hope to move to the next step once that framework is completed. We are now focused on finalizing the framework of understanding between the two sides, as we do not want to engage in any negotiations or meetings that lead to another failure, which could be used as a pretext for another round of military or political escalation in the region.”.
