Israeli shelling targets northern Litani, threatening the truce in Lebanon

The Israeli occupation army renewed its military aggression against Lebanese territory, carrying out a series of intense airstrikes targeting deep inside southern Lebanon, in a dangerous escalation that threatens the stability of the region. The bombing struck residential buildings in towns north of the Litani River, specifically in the towns of Jarjouh, Qanarit, and Kfour, just hours after earlier strikes that killed two people, whom the occupation claimed were members of Hezbollah.

These raids carry significant strategic and military implications, given the location of the targeted towns north of the Litani River, an area relatively far from the immediate border with the occupied territories. This targeting comes at a highly sensitive time, as the Lebanese army prepares to present a comprehensive plan to the government next month, outlining specific mechanisms for disarming Hezbollah in these areas. This follows its earlier announcement regarding arrangements for the border region south of the river, highlighting the complexities of the political and military landscape.

Despite a ceasefire agreement reached in November 2024, ongoing Israeli violations jeopardize the agreement. Observers note that the continued Israeli airstrikes and ground incursions reflect the fragility of the security situation and hinder international and local efforts to establish calm. The recurrence of these attacks not only results in material and human losses but also undermines the Lebanese state's efforts to extend its full sovereignty over its territory through its legitimate institutions.

Southern Lebanon has long been plagued by intermittent tensions, but the recent escalation raises serious concerns about a wider conflict. The area south and north of the Litani River is a pivotal flashpoint in the ongoing conflict, where international actors are striving to ensure the implementation of relevant UN resolutions. The international community fears that continued violations could lead to an uncontrollable explosion of violence, exacerbating the humanitarian suffering of civilians in the southern villages and towns who are bearing the brunt of this protracted conflict.
