
Signs of deteriorating relations: Japan downgrades its description of China to that of an “important neighbor.”
Since 2016, the Japanese Foreign Ministry has been describing China In the “Blue Book,” Tokyo’s official diplomatic positions are defined as “one of Japan’s most important partners.”.
This year’s edition, however, used a different expression, referring to China as an “important neighbor.”.
China-Japan relations
This annual report, which details the activities and policies of the Japanese Foreign Ministry, accuses Beijing of “escalating its unilateral criticism and intimidation tactics against Japan.”.
Relations between China and Japan, the world's second and fourth largest economies respectively, deteriorated last fall after Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi suggested her country might intervene militarily in the event of an attack on Taiwan.
China maintains that Taiwan is part of its territory and has not ruled out using force to annex it.
Chinese tourists
Beijing advised its citizens to avoid travel to Japan, where Chinese tourists are a significant source of revenue, and imposed tariffs on some Japanese companies.
