Jeddah dust storm: Weather warnings and its effects on the weather

Jeddah is under the influence of a dense dust storm

Jeddah experienced severe weather fluctuations this morning, Sunday, as dust storm across the city, turning the sky an orange hue due to the dust particles. This weather condition caused a significant and sharp decrease in horizontal visibility on several main and secondary roads, prompting authorities to mobilize to ensure the safety of citizens and residents.

Details of the orange alert from the National Center of Meteorology

In response to these developments, the National Center for Meteorology issued an advanced warning at the "orange alert" level, cautioning against continued weather fluctuations directly affecting large parts of the Makkah region, specifically Jeddah and Al-Shuaiba. The center explained that this situation is due to strong surface winds stirring up dust and sand, with southerly wind speeds reaching approximately 37 kilometers per hour, reducing horizontal visibility to less than one kilometer. This weather condition is expected to persist until 8:00 PM this evening.

Weather effects on maritime navigation and highways

The effects of the dust storm were not limited to the land but extended to the coasts as well. The meteorological statement indicated the possibility of high sea waves, urging beachgoers and fishermen to exercise extreme caution to avoid any maritime accidents. In a related matter, traffic and security authorities called on drivers to be extremely careful while driving, especially on vital highways such as the Haramain Expressway and the Jeddah-Mecca Expressway, emphasizing the importance of maintaining safe distances and using fog lights.

Health guidelines for dealing with dust particles

From a health perspective, sandstorms pose a significant challenge for those with respiratory conditions. Therefore, health authorities have emphasized the importance of asthma and allergy sufferers staying indoors as much as possible and avoiding direct exposure to dust. They also strongly advise wearing face masks when going outside and keeping windows and doors tightly closed to prevent dust from entering homes, thus protecting public health.

The climatic and environmental context of dust storms in the Kingdom

Historically and geographically, Saudi Arabia, due to its desert nature and location, is prone to dust storms and sandstorms, especially during seasonal transitions (such as the transition from winter to spring). These phenomena occur as a result of significant differences in atmospheric pressure and temperature variations, generating strong downdrafts that stir up sand from open areas and carry it towards coastal and inland cities.

The strategic importance of combating desertification

At both the regional and international levels, mitigating the impacts of these storms is crucial, as their damage extends beyond public health to affect economic activity, air traffic, and maritime navigation. To address these long-term environmental and climatic challenges, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has launched pioneering initiatives, most notably the Saudi Green Initiative and the Middle East Green Initiative. These initiatives aim to plant billions of trees and increase vegetation cover, effectively stabilizing the soil, reducing sand encroachment, and mitigating the severity and frequency of future dust storms. This reflects the Kingdom's commitment to improving quality of life and protecting the environment in line with Vision 2030.
