Jeddah enters Guinness World Records with the largest health innovation hackathon for Hajj and Umrah

Jeddah witnessed an exceptional event reflecting the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's commitment to harnessing technology to serve pilgrims. His Royal Highness Prince Saud bin Abdullah bin Jalawi, Governor of Jeddah, sponsored the closing ceremony of the "Health Innovation Hackathon" for Hajj and Umrah. This prominent event, organized by the Second Health Cluster in Jeddah in collaboration with the "Let's Take the Initiative" volunteer and community partnership program, was not merely a technology competition, but a global platform that culminated in its entry into the Guinness World Records.

A record that reflects Saudi leadership

Upon the arrival of His Royal Highness the Governor of Jeddah at the venue, the Royal Anthem was played, signaling the start of the closing ceremony. His Royal Highness then received the official certificate of accreditation from representatives of Guinness World Records, after the hackathon successfully set a new world record for the largest gathering of health innovations globally. This achievement underscores the Kingdom's position as a regional and international hub for digital innovation, particularly in fields related to humanitarian and religious aspects, and was made possible through the broad participation of governmental and private entities whose combined efforts contributed to this success.

Strategic context: Innovation in service of Vision 2030

This event cannot be separated from the broader context of the Kingdom's Vision 2030, specifically the "Guests of God Service Program." With the Kingdom aiming to receive millions of pilgrims and Umrah performers annually, the urgent need arises to develop innovative healthcare solutions capable of efficiently managing these massive crowds. Jeddah, as the gateway to the Two Holy Mosques, is the ideal strategic location to host such initiatives, which aim to transform the health challenges of religious seasons into opportunities for technological leadership.

Quality pathways for sustainable solutions

The hackathon's primary goal was to leverage creativity and innovation to develop high-quality healthcare solutions for pilgrims, with a focus on empowering young Saudi talent and fostering a culture of social responsibility. Participants competed across four specific innovative tracks:

  • Innovation in health products: Development of smart medical devices and tools.
  • Innovation in healthcare: Improving medical supply chains and logistics.
  • Improving the Hajj and Umrah experience: Applications and solutions that facilitate a healthy Hajj journey.
  • Innovation in health media: Digital awareness tools for prevention and safety.

The future of digital healthcare

This event reflects the significant transformation underway in the Kingdom's healthcare sector, where artificial intelligence and big data analytics are being integrated to enhance quality of life. The winning solutions and outcomes of this hackathon are expected to contribute to the development of a digital healthcare system, reduce emergency response times, and provide proactive care for pilgrims, thereby strengthening their health and safety during Hajj.

At the conclusion of the ceremony, which was attended by the Director of the Ministry of Health branch in Jeddah, Dr. Meshal Al-Sayyali, and the CEO of the Second Health Cluster, Dr. Shadi Al-Khayyat, His Highness the Governor of Jeddah honored the winners in the various tracks, praising the efforts of the supporting and participating entities that contributed to bringing this event out in a manner befitting the Kingdom’s global standing.
