Cocaine smuggling attempt foiled at Jeddah port; customs officials reveal details

In another security achievement added to its record of successes, the Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority (ZATCA) announced that it had thwarted an attempt to smuggle a large quantity of cocaine through Jeddah Islamic Port. The seized amount totaled 8.4 kilograms, which was concealed in a sophisticated and ingenious manner inside a commercial container arriving in the Kingdom, reflecting the vigilance and efficiency of customs officers in protecting the nation's borders.

This successful operation comes within the framework of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's ongoing efforts to combat the scourge of drugs and protect society, especially young people, from its grave harms. Jeddah Islamic Port, as the Kingdom's largest port on the Red Sea coast and a major regional trade hub, is a strategic and vital point, making it a constant target for organized crime networks seeking to exploit the large volume of trade to smuggle illicit substances.

In detailing the operation, ZATCA spokesperson Hamoud Al-Harbi explained that the shipment was discovered during routine customs procedures. Using state-of-the-art security technologies, including X-ray scanners and live detection methods (trained sniffer dogs), inspectors became suspicious of the container. Upon thorough inspection, the cocaine was found carefully concealed within a compartment designed for the container's air conditioning unit, in an attempt to disguise and mislead authorities.

The Authority also reiterated its call for everyone to contribute to protecting society by reporting any information related to smuggling crimes via the dedicated security reporting hotline (1910) or email (1910@zatca.gov.sa), emphasizing that all reports are treated with the utmost confidentiality and that a financial reward will be granted to the informant if the information is found to be accurate.
