Safadi and Araqchi talks: Jordan supports de-escalation in the region

Jordanian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Ayman Safadi, held important telephone talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, which focused mainly on the need for concerted regional and international efforts to reduce the dangerous escalation in the Middle East region and to prevent the region from sliding into a full-scale war that could have disastrous consequences for international peace and security.

During the call, Safadi reiterated the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan's firm and unwavering position that Jordan will not become an arena for any regional conflict and will not allow any party to violate its airspace or endanger the security of its citizens. He emphasized that protecting Jordan and its sovereignty is a top priority, and that the Kingdom will resolutely confront any attempt to breach its airspace, whether by drones or missiles, regardless of their origin, in accordance with its defense policy aimed at distancing itself from direct military conflicts.

A tense regional context and risks of expansion

These talks come at a highly sensitive time, as the region experiences unprecedented tensions due to the ongoing Israeli aggression against the Gaza Strip, the escalation of military operations in Lebanon, and the continuing tensions between Israel and Iran. The international community fears that any miscalculations could ignite a wider confrontation that might draw in other international and regional powers.

In this context, Safadi explained to his Iranian counterpart that the first and essential step to defusing the crisis lies in the immediate cessation of aggression against Gaza and Lebanon, and an end to the humanitarian catastrophe afflicting the Palestinian people. He pointed out that the continuation of aggressive policies and unilateral measures in the West Bank and occupied Jerusalem only serves agendas of escalation that threaten the stability of the entire region.

Jordan's diplomatic role and the importance of the event

This contact is particularly important given Jordan's geostrategic location at the heart of a volatile region, making it directly affected by any security deterioration in neighboring countries. Jordanian diplomacy, under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah II, has consistently played a pivotal role in bridging the gaps between opposing sides and garnering international support for political solutions rather than military ones.

Observers believe that direct communication between Amman and Tehran is part of Jordan’s strategy to keep communication channels open with all active parties, with the aim of conveying clear messages about Jordan’s red lines, and to emphasize that security and military solutions will not bring security to Israel or the region, and that the only way to achieve lasting stability is the two-state solution that guarantees the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Safadi concluded by emphasizing that Jordan is continuing its intensive diplomatic efforts with international and Arab partners to push for a ceasefire, ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid, and work towards creating a genuine political horizon that will end the decades-long cycle of violence.
