KAUST launches quantum manufacturing facility to boost technological innovation

In a strategic move to bolster Saudi Arabia’s position as a global hub for advanced technologies, King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) has launched the KAUST Quantum Foundry program. This ambitious project aims to bridge the gap between theoretical research and commercial application by enhancing the Kingdom’s readiness to manufacture reproducible and marketable quantum devices, marking a significant milestone in the region’s digital and technological transformation.
Context of the shift towards quantum technologies
This initiative comes at a time when the world is witnessing a fierce race to acquire quantum computing technologies, which are considered the next industrial revolution due to their superior ability to process data and solve complex problems that traditional computers cannot handle. In line with the goals of the Kingdom's Vision 2030, which aims to build a knowledge-based and innovation-driven economy, the establishment of this facility is a direct response to the urgent need to localize these critical technologies. Traditionally, the quantum device industry has suffered from being isolated and specialized laboratory processes that are difficult to replicate or scale up, hindering its transition from laboratories to the market.
An innovative approach to manufacturing and standardization
The new facility features a unique operating model based on KAUST’s state-of-the-art cleanroom infrastructure. Instead of relying on ad hoc processes, the facility focuses on standardizing production and developing quantum process design kits (PDKs). These kits are revolutionary tools that enable researchers and engineers to design and manufacture devices using systematic, predefined processes, ensuring quality and reliability, and distinguishing this facility from conventional general-purpose nanofabrication facilities.
Strengthening the innovation and industrial cooperation system
The program's role extends beyond academia to include fostering partnerships with industry. By providing structured and shared access to KAUST's specialized facilities, the program opens up vast opportunities for prototyping and accelerates innovation. The facility will operate as a phased initiative, expanding its capabilities over time to encompass multiple quantum platforms, such as superconductors, photonics, and hybrids, creating a fertile environment for technology transfer and early commercialization in collaboration with entities like the National Transformation Institute (NTI).
