Specialized Hospital launches air transport of radioactive materials between Riyadh and Jeddah

In a strategic move aimed at enhancing the healthcare system in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre announced the launch of an air transport service for short-lived radiopharmaceuticals. This initiative was successfully completed following a pilot flight that transported these vital materials by air from the hospital's main campus in Riyadh to its branch in Jeddah, marking the beginning of a new era in advanced medical logistics services.

The challenge of time and the half-life of radioactive materials

This step is of paramount importance due to the complex physical and chemical nature of radiopharmaceuticals. These substances are characterized by what is scientifically known as a "short half-life," the time it takes for a substance to lose half its radioactivity, and consequently half its therapeutic or diagnostic efficacy. Because this decay occurs so rapidly, traditional land transport between the Kingdom's widely dispersed cities has posed a significant obstacle to delivering these medications to patients with full efficacy. This makes air transport not merely a luxury option, but a pressing medical necessity for saving lives and ensuring the accurate diagnosis of intractable diseases.

Global safety standards and Civil Aviation Authority license

The launch of this service was not a coincidence, but rather the result of diligent efforts to comply with the highest international safety standards. The hospital obtained the necessary licenses from the General Authority of Civil Aviation to transport these hazardous and sensitive materials by air, after fulfilling all the stringent technical and logistical requirements. This license ensures that transport operations are conducted according to strict protocols that protect medical staff, the environment, and the public, while maintaining the integrity of the medical product until it reaches the patient.

Sustainable economic and health impact

In addition to the direct medical benefits of faster treatment and more accurate tumor diagnosis, this service offers a sustainable economic solution at the national level. Instead of investing heavily in complex production facilities (cyclotrons) and hot-web laboratories in every region of the Kingdom, production can now be concentrated at the main center in Riyadh, and products distributed with high efficiency. This approach allows financial resources to be directed toward improving other healthcare services and enhances the quality of nuclear medicine services and equal access to them across the Kingdom.

Global leadership in healthcare

This achievement further solidifies King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre's position as one of the world's leading medical institutions. The hospital was ranked first in the Middle East and Africa and 15th globally in the 2025 list of the top 250 academic healthcare institutions. It was also named the most valuable healthcare brand in the region according to Brand Finance's 2024 ranking, underscoring its ongoing commitment to adopting the latest technologies and solutions to serve patients.
