Kadana develops fire and cooling networks in Mina in preparation for Hajj

Enhancing the safety and comfort of pilgrims in Mina

Kadana Development and Investment Company, the master developer of the Holy Sites and the executive arm of the Royal Commission for Makkah City and the Holy Sites, announced the completion of a vital project to replace and upgrade the fire suppression and cooling systems within the tent enclosures in Mina. This achievement comes as part of the early preparations for the 1447 AH Hajj season and reflects the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s commitment to providing the highest standards of safety and comfort for the millions of pilgrims who flock to the Holy Land annually.

Historical background and importance of the project

Mina, known as the “City of Tents,” holds immense religious significance, as pilgrims spend most of their Hajj rituals there. Over the decades, managing this massive human gathering has presented a formidable logistical and security challenge. The site has witnessed tragic incidents in the past, most notably the 1997 tent fire, a turning point that prompted Saudi authorities to undertake a massive project to replace traditional tents with modern, fire-resistant ones. Since then, infrastructure development and enhanced safety systems, such as fire suppression networks, have become top priorities to ensure such tragedies are not repeated and to provide a safe environment for pilgrims.

Project details and technical dimensions

Kadana explained that the project encompassed the development of 188 residential blocks comprising 565 camps, with a total of 339,000 linear meters of renovated networks. This massive undertaking was implemented in four consecutive development phases to ensure continuity of work without impacting previous seasons. The replacement process aims to replace the old networks with modern ones made of high-quality, efficient materials to reduce the risk of breakdowns and leaks, and to enhance the efficiency of the cooling systems, which are essential for coping with the high temperatures in Makkah during the summer, thus directly contributing to the health and comfort of pilgrims.

Expected impact and alignment with Vision 2030

The impact of this project extends beyond the local level to encompass the entire Muslim world. Providing safe and reliable infrastructure in the Holy Sites enhances the Kingdom's reputation as a leader of the Muslim world and the custodian of the Two Holy Mosques. This project also aligns directly with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030 and the "Serving the Guests of God" program, which aims to enrich the religious experience of pilgrims and facilitate their journey. Through these projects, the Kingdom reaffirms its commitment to dedicating all resources to serving the guests of God and providing advanced engineering solutions that ensure their safety and enable them to perform their rituals with ease and peace of mind.
