A young man was saved from splenic hemorrhage using interventional radiology in Mecca
King Abdullah Medical City , an active member of the Makkah Health Cluster recorded a new medical achievement that adds to its record of successes, by being able to save the life of a young man aged twenty-eight, who was facing imminent danger to his life as a result of suffering from severe and active bleeding in the spleen.
The incident occurred when the young man suffered a severe fall from a height, resulting in serious injuries that caused a ruptured spleen and internal bleeding, threatening his vital functions. The patient's rescue began with his admission to Al Noor Specialist Hospital , where the emergency team professionally managed the situation, performing immediate resuscitation, administering rapid blood transfusions to replace lost blood, and initially stabilizing his vital signs.
Integrated healthcare system and rapid response
In line with the concept of integrated work among the facilities of the Makkah Health Cluster, the emergency referral system has been activated to transfer patients immediately to King Abdullah Medical City. This measure leverages advanced technological capabilities and specialized personnel experienced in handling complex cases, reflecting the efficiency of the medical referral system, which ensures patients receive appropriate care in record time.
The precision of interventional radiology eliminates the need for traditional surgery
Upon the patient's arrival, the medical team decided against traditional surgical intervention (which could have involved a complete splenectomy) and opted instead for interventional radiology . This technique represents a revolution in modern medicine, as the team performed a very precise catheterization of the blood vessels, enabling them to selectively access the bleeding artery within the spleen.
Using modern embolization techniques, the source of bleeding was completely blocked and stopped, while taking great care to preserve blood flow to the rest of the spleen. This precise procedure preserved the organ and its vital immune functions in the patient's body, sparing them the risks of open surgery and lengthy recovery periods.
Healthcare that aligns with Vision 2030
The medical city confirmed that the successful completion of this procedure without complications reflects the significant advancements in the Kingdom's healthcare sector and the pivotal role of modern treatment technologies in accelerating recovery and minimizing risks. This achievement aligns with the objectives of the healthcare transformation program and the Kingdom's Vision 2030, which aims to provide comprehensive, world-class healthcare to citizens and residents and enhance the quality of specialized medical services in the Holy Sites and Makkah.
