21,000 fasting people in Indonesia partake in the meals of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques

In a magnificent display of faith embodying the highest ideals of Islamic brotherhood, the Grand Mosque (National Mosque) in Surabaya, Indonesia, hosted the largest Ramadan iftar gathering, where more than 21,500 fasting individuals shared meals as part of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques' program for providing iftar meals. This grand event, organized by the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Dawah and Guidance of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, was more than just a meal; it was a demonstration of love and solidarity, reflecting the deep bonds between the Saudi and Indonesian peoples.
Details of the event at the Grand Mosque
As the call to Maghrib prayer sounded, the courtyards of the Grand Mosque – one of the most prominent Islamic landmarks in Southeast Asia, accommodating approximately 40,000 worshippers – were filled with thousands of fasting Muslims who flocked to participate in this blessed iftar meal. The Religious Attaché at the Saudi Embassy in Jakarta meticulously organized the event, distributing complete iftar meals along with premium dates, a symbol of Saudi generosity, creating an atmosphere of tranquility and peace among those present.
Significance of honoring those who memorize the Book of God
What distinguished this exceptional event was the remarkable presence of approximately 5,000 male and female memorizers of the Holy Quran among the program's beneficiaries. This initiative serves as a clear message affirming the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and its wise leadership's commitment to supporting Quran memorizers across the globe and encouraging them to continue their educational journey. This commitment is a consistent principle in Saudi policy, which places serving the Two Holy Mosques and the Holy Quran at the forefront of its priorities.
Dimensions of Saudi-Indonesian relations
This event cannot be viewed in isolation from the historical context of relations between Riyadh and Jakarta. Indonesia, home to the world's largest Muslim population, holds a special place with the Kingdom. These iftar programs are part of a form of "spiritual diplomacy" that enhances the Kingdom's soft power and underscores its leading role in the Islamic world. The Governor of East Java, Dr. Khofifah Indar Farawnsa, along with religious and military leaders, attended the banquet, reflecting Indonesian official appreciation for Saudi Arabia's ongoing efforts.
Official and popular praise
In her address at the event, the Governor of East Java expressed her gratitude and appreciation to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz, and His Royal Highness the Crown Prince – may God protect them – affirming that these initiatives touch the hearts of Indonesians and strengthen bonds of affection. For his part, the Religious Attaché at the Kingdom's Embassy explained that the program is under the direct supervision of His Excellency the Minister of Islamic Affairs, Sheikh Dr. Abdul Latif Al-Sheikh, to ensure that the aid reaches those who deserve it in the best possible manner befitting the Kingdom's stature.
It is worth mentioning that the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques’ program for providing Iftar meals to fasting people is an annual global initiative that covers dozens of countries. It aims to build bridges of communication with Muslims around the world and to address their needs during this holy month, in confirmation of the Kingdom’s message based on moderation, balance, and unlimited humanitarian giving.
