Kuwait condemns Iranian violations, sparking widespread Gulf condemnation

Kuwait expressed its strong condemnation of what it described as Iranian “attacks and violations” of its sovereignty, in a new escalation of tensions related to maritime border disputes between the two countries. The Kuwaiti Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued an official statement affirming Kuwait’s categorical rejection of any unilateral actions by Tehran, emphasizing its full sovereign rights to its natural resources—a position that received immediate support from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states.

Historical background and context of the conflict

The current tensions stem from a long-standing dispute over the Dorra gas field (known in Iran as Arash). This field lies in the Neutral Zone shared by Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, and Iran claims a portion of it. For decades, trilateral negotiations have failed to reach an agreement on demarcating the maritime boundaries in this gas-rich area. Kuwait and Saudi Arabia consider the Dorra field a shared natural resource and previously agreed to develop it jointly, a position rejected by Iran, which seeks to impose a fait accompli through statements and plans for unilateral exploration.

Unified Gulf condemnation

Immediately following the Kuwaiti statement, supportive reactions poured in from the Gulf states. The General Secretariat of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) issued a statement affirming its full solidarity with Kuwait in all measures it takes to defend its sovereignty and rights. Similar statements were also issued by the foreign ministries of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, and Oman, all emphasizing that the security of the GCC states is indivisible and that any infringement upon the sovereignty of any member state is an infringement upon the security and stability of the entire region.

Importance and expected effects

These developments are of paramount importance given their potential impact on several levels. Domestically, the Kuwaiti government's stance strengthens and unifies the home front behind its leadership in defending national interests. Regionally, this escalation tests the resilience of the recent rapprochement between the Gulf states and Iran, particularly following the resumption of diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran. It also underscores that fundamental points of contention, such as border demarcation and shared resources, remain obstacles to building genuine and lasting trust. Internationally, this dispute raises concerns in global energy markets, as any tension in the Gulf region, a vital artery for oil and gas supplies, could lead to price volatility and threaten supply stability.

In conclusion, Kuwait reiterates its call to Iran to abide by the principles of international law and good neighborliness, and to return to the negotiating table to resolve the issue of maritime border demarcation, while emphasizing that it retains all its rights to take whatever measures it deems appropriate to protect its interests and national sovereignty.
