Launch of the "First Step" campaign to promote water sustainability in Saudi Arabia

In a strategic move aimed at enhancing water security and preserving natural resources, the National Center for Water Efficiency and Conservation (Ma3i) launched its new awareness campaign under the slogan “First Step.” This initiative comes within the framework of ongoing national efforts to promote water sustainability, extending an open invitation to all members of society, as well as governmental and private entities, to actively participate by adopting simple yet impactful daily practices to improve water consumption efficiency.

National context and ambitious vision

The “First Step” campaign is not a fleeting event, but rather stems from the core of the National Water Strategy that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is implementing in complete alignment with the goals of Vision 2030. Given the Kingdom’s geographical and climatic characteristics, water is a strategic resource requiring wise and sustainable management. Like other countries in the region, the Kingdom faces challenges related to the scarcity of natural water resources, making reliance on groundwater and seawater desalination a primary option, which entails high economic and environmental costs. Therefore, water conservation programs are not merely an option, but an urgent necessity to ensure a secure water future for generations to come.

Linking daily behavior to developmental impact

The Water Center explained that the campaign's philosophy is based on the idea that significant change begins with a small step. The campaign is designed to connect complex conservation concepts with simple, everyday behaviors in homes and workplaces. It aims to shift public awareness through smart communication messages that highlight how simple actions, such as installing water-saving devices, repairing leaks, or changing water usage habits, can collectively contribute to saving millions of cubic meters of water annually. This direct link between individual behavior and overall developmental impact is at the heart of the campaign, transforming citizens and residents from consumers into partners in development.

The economic and environmental dimensions of sustainability

The importance of this campaign extends beyond raising awareness to encompass its economic and environmental impact. Conserving water necessarily means reducing energy consumption in desalination, transportation, and treatment processes, thereby lowering carbon emissions and generating financial savings for both the government and consumers. The campaign aims to highlight this interconnected relationship between water, energy, and the environment, reinforcing the public's understanding of the value of every drop of water.

It is worth noting that the “First Step” campaign is witnessing broad participation from the public and private sectors, reflecting the integration of national efforts to raise the efficiency of water resource management and enhance its sustainability, in pursuit of a vibrant society and a sustainable and prosperous environment.
