Leonardo Jardim appointed as Flamengo's coach: Full details

Brazilian club Flamengo, one of the most prestigious clubs in South America, has officially announced the signing of veteran Portuguese coach Leonardo Jardim to take over as head coach of the first team. This move comes as an attempt to get the team back on track after a series of disappointing results that led to the sudden dismissal of former coach Filipe Luis earlier this week.

The Rio de Janeiro-based club welcomed their new coach on social media with the message: “Welcome to Flamengo, Leonardo Jardim,” explaining that the contract was signed on Wednesday and runs until December. Jardim is scheduled to be officially presented to the media and fans on Thursday, after leading his first training session with the players, reflecting the management's desire to quickly establish stability at the helm.

A career full of global and Arab achievements

Leonardo Jardim, 51, boasts an impressive resume that makes him an ideal choice to manage Flamengo at this critical juncture. The Portuguese coach cemented his place in European football history when he led Monaco to the French league title in 2017, breaking Paris Saint-Germain's dominance and introducing a golden generation of players to the world.

On the Arab level, Jardim left an indelible mark on the Gulf region between 2021 and 2025. He led Saudi Arabia's Al-Hilal to continental glory by winning the 2021 AFC Champions League title, in addition to securing the Saudi Professional League title. His successes didn't stop there; he moved to the UAE to lead Shabab Al-Ahli Dubai to the UAE Pro League title in 2023, demonstrating his ability to adapt to diverse football environments and achieve titles.

Jardim faces major challenges at the Maracanã

Jardim's appointment comes at a time when Flamengo is under immense pressure, having failed to make the season as expected despite currently boasting the largest budget in South America. The team suffered two painful blows at the start of the season, losing the Brazilian Super Cup to Corinthians (0-2) and then the Recopa Sudamericana title at the historic Maracanã stadium to Argentina's Lanús (2-3).

Despite the team's recent resounding 8-0 victory over the modest Madureira side, the management felt a change in coaching staff was necessary to ensure they could compete for major titles. Jardim had resigned from his position as coach of Brazilian club Cruzeiro last December after just ten months, citing his desire to protect his physical and mental health, and has now returned to the helm of the giants Flamengo.

In a related context, the dismissed coach, Filipe Luis (40 years old), bid farewell to the club's fans with a touching message via Instagram, saying: "I leave in peace, with my head held high and a clear conscience. Football has cycles, and our cycle was historic," thus closing a short but eventful chapter at the Brazilian club.
