Liam Rossinior appointed Chelsea manager until 2032, succeeding Maresca
In a surprising move reflecting the London club's desire for long-term stability, English club Chelsea announced today (Tuesday) the appointment of Liam Rosenior as the first team's manager, succeeding Italian Enzo Maresca, who was dismissed from his position due to fluctuating results and performance in the recent period.
Long-term contract and new strategy
The club explained in an official statement on its website that Rosenior signed a contract to coach the team until 2032. The very long duration of this contract (8 years) is in line with the policy adopted by the club's management, led by the Clearlake Capital and Todd Bohley alliance, which relies on granting long-term contracts to players and coaches in order to build a sustainable sporting project and distribute financial costs. This strategy aims to end the state of technical instability that the team has suffered in recent years with the succession of several coaches.
From Strasbourg to Stamford Bridge
Rossinior arrives at Stamford Bridge bolstered by a highly successful stint with the same ownership group (BlueCo), having led French club Strasbourg in a remarkable spell. In his first season with the French side, the young coach guided them to European competition for the first time in 19 years, making him the ideal choice for the management given his familiarity with the group's operations and his proven ability to develop young talent.
Premier League challenges and Chelsea's ambitions
The 41-year-old English manager faces a significant challenge in the Premier League, considered the most competitive league in the world. Chelsea fans expect Rossoneri to restore the team's attacking identity and seriously challenge for Champions League qualification as an initial objective, before returning to winning ways.
In his first comments, Rossinior expressed his delight at taking charge of the Blues, saying: “I feel incredibly humbled and proud to be appointed manager of Chelsea. It’s a club with a unique spirit and a rich history of winning trophies.” He added: “My task is to protect this identity and build a team that reflects these values in every match we play, as we continue to compete for titles. This role means a great deal to me, and I thank everyone who has placed their trust in me. I will do my utmost to achieve the success this club deserves.”.
The team's position in the league
Rossinior takes over with Chelsea sitting fifth in the Premier League table with 31 points. The team has accumulated these points from eight wins, seven draws, and five losses – a record the new manager will be looking to improve to secure a top-four finish at the end of the season.
