A logistics center at King Fahd Airport to end truck congestion
In a move aimed at transforming the logistics sector in the Eastern Province, the Eastern Province Chamber of Commerce announced a joint strategic initiative with the Eastern Province Development Authority and Dammam Airports Company. This initiative involves launching a vital project to establish and operate an integrated service center and dedicated truck parking facilities within the King Fahd International Airport complex, addressing existing challenges in the land transport sector.
Strategic location and radical solutions
The project boasts a prime location on the southern side of the GCC Highway, making it a key hub for both through and local heavy transport. This strategic positioning aims to provide a permanent and comprehensive solution to the truck congestion problem that has long plagued residential areas and urban centers in the Dammam metropolitan area. By offering a regulated and safe alternative, the center will divert trucks from city centers, directly contributing to easing traffic congestion and improving traffic flow on internal roads.
In line with the Kingdom's Vision 2030
This project cannot be viewed in isolation from the broader national context, as it aligns perfectly with the objectives of the Kingdom's Vision 2030 and the National Transport and Logistics Strategy, which aims to solidify the Kingdom's position as a global logistics hub connecting three continents. The Eastern Province, as the Kingdom's industrial and energy capital, is the backbone of this strategy, making the development of its logistics infrastructure a pressing necessity to support rapid economic growth.
Economic and developmental dimensions
The project is part of a comprehensive development plan for Al-Bayda Governorate, serving as a vital artery supporting supply chains and enhancing the efficiency of trade flows. The center is expected to reduce operating costs for transport companies by providing integrated services in one location, as well as attract new investments to the region's logistics sector, thereby fostering a competitive environment and creating new job opportunities.
Enhancing safety and quality of life
The project's engineering design places a strong emphasis on improving road safety. By relocating heavy trucks away from the city center, traffic accidents will be reduced, and noise and environmental pollution within residential neighborhoods will be minimized, thus contributing to the "Quality of Life" program. The center provides a specialized service environment that ensures driver comfort and highway users' safety.
The relevant authorities have called on all specialized national companies and institutions and investors wishing to take advantage of this promising opportunity to submit their files to compete for qualification to implement this project, stressing that the center will constitute a landmark in the transportation system in the Eastern Province.
