Macron warns of consequences for violating the sovereignty of Greenland and Denmark
French President Emmanuel Macron warned on Wednesday, during a cabinet meeting, that any violation of Greenland's sovereignty would have "unprecedented" consequences, in a direct and firm response to hints and threats from the US regarding the annexation of this self-governing Danish territory to the United States.
French government spokesperson Maud Brégon quoted President Macron as telling the press: "We do not take lightly the statements concerning Greenland. If the sovereignty of a European ally is violated, the ensuing consequences will be unprecedented." Brégon emphasized that France is following developments with the utmost attention and concern, stressing that Paris will stand in complete solidarity with Denmark in defending its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The context of American ambitions in the Arctic
This is not the first time the United States has raised the issue of "buying" or annexing Greenland. President Donald Trump previously floated the idea during his first term in 2019, describing it as a "great real estate deal." This was met with firm rejection from both the Danish government and the Greenlandic government, which stated that the island was "open for business but not for sale." American interest in the island dates back decades, with Washington having attempted to purchase it in 1946 due to its geopolitical significance.
The strategic and economic importance of Greenland
Greenland's strategic importance extends far beyond its vast ice sheet. Situated in a vital location between the Arctic and the Atlantic Ocean, it is a crucial military and security hub. The island already hosts Thule Air Force Base, the northernmost US military base, which plays a pivotal role in ballistic missile early warning and space surveillance.
Furthermore, with the melting ice sheet caused by climate change, Greenland has become a target for major powers due to its untapped natural resources. Geological studies indicate that the island contains vast reserves of rare earth minerals, oil, gas, and uranium—vital resources for modern technology industries and the energy transition—thus intensifying international competition for them, particularly between the West, China, and Russia.
Repercussions of the situation on the Western alliance
Macron's warning comes at a sensitive time for transatlantic relations, with observers believing that any unilateral US action against a member state of the European Union and NATO, such as Denmark, could create a deep rift in the structure of the Western alliance. Through this firm stance, Macron seeks to reaffirm the principle of "European sovereignty" and the necessity for European countries to stand united against any external pressure, even from their closest allies, to guarantee the independence of European decision-making and protect the continent's territory.
