First mobile cardiac catheterization for a pilgrim in Medina | Hajj Health

In a historic step reflecting the tremendous advancements in healthcare services provided to pilgrims, the Madinah Health Cluster announced the successful completion of its first cardiac catheterization procedure in a state-of-the-art mobile unit. The procedure was performed on a pilgrim who suffered a sudden heart attack near the Prophet's Mosque. The urgent medical intervention took place at Al-Salam Waqf Hospital, adjacent to the mosque, representing a significant leap forward in the speed of response to critical cases and the saving of lives during the busy Hajj season.

Historical background of the Kingdom's efforts in providing healthcare for pilgrims

Since its founding, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has placed great importance on the health and safety of pilgrims to the Holy Mosque in Mecca and visitors to the Prophet's Mosque in Medina. These efforts have evolved over decades, from simple first aid teams and seasonal clinics to a comprehensive healthcare system encompassing permanent and field hospitals and health centers throughout Mecca, Medina, and the Holy Sites. The launch of mobile medical units equipped with the latest technologies, such as a cardiac catheterization unit, represents the culmination of this long history of service and a continuous pursuit of innovation to serve the pilgrims and ensure they receive the best possible care in record time.

The importance of the mobile catheterization unit and its expected impact

The strategic importance of this initiative lies in its ability to reduce the "golden hour" for saving patients with acute myocardial infarctions, as time is of the essence in preserving the heart muscle and minimizing complications. Instead of transferring the patient to a specialized cardiac center, which can be time-consuming, especially given the high volume of patients, it is now possible to perform immediate diagnostic and therapeutic interventions at a location very close to the patient. The unit witnessed the success of its first medical intervention on a pilgrim, who underwent two emergency cardiac catheterizations, both of which were completely successful. The patient is currently in good and stable health, confirming the effectiveness and readiness of this field technology.

In line with the Kingdom's Vision 2030

This medical achievement aligns directly with the objectives of the Health Sector Transformation Program and the Kingdom’s Vision 2030, which aim to enhance the quality and efficiency of healthcare services and improve accessibility. Providing specialized and precise medical care in the field reflects the Kingdom’s commitment to harnessing all available technological and human resources to enhance the experience of pilgrims and Umrah performers, and to achieve the highest standards of safety and quality in healthcare. This development also highlights the Kingdom’s leading role regionally and internationally in crowd management and the provision of advanced medical services during the world’s largest religious gatherings, further solidifying its position as a safe and reliable destination for millions of Muslims annually.
