Hajj in good health: An initiative to physically prepare pilgrims in Medina

As part of the intensive preparations for the 1445 AH Hajj season, and within the framework of the comprehensive national campaign “Hajj in Good Health,” the Madinah Health Cluster announced the launch of a unique initiative entitled “Preparing Those Wishing to Perform Hajj.” This proactive step is part of an integrated strategy aimed at enhancing the physical and health readiness of pilgrims, and ensuring they can perform their rituals with ease, tranquility, and devotion.

General context and importance of physical readiness during Hajj

Hajj, the fifth pillar of Islam, is a unique spiritual journey that demands considerable physical exertion. The rituals of Hajj, which include circumambulating the Kaaba, walking between Safa and Marwa, standing at Arafat, stoning the Jamarat, and moving between the holy sites, require a high level of physical fitness and the ability to endure long distances of walking, often in hot weather conditions. Throughout history, the government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has placed great importance on the health and safety of pilgrims, as it receives millions of Muslims annually from around the world. This makes preventative health planning a cornerstone of the successful organization of this global Islamic event.

Details of the Health Rehabilitation Initiative

The new initiative launched by the Madinah Health Cluster focuses on providing a package of high-quality health services designed to assess and prepare pilgrims before they begin their journey. These specialized services include:

  • Measuring muscle strength and flexibility: to assess the pilgrim's ability to perform rituals that require physical effort.
  • Fall probability assessment: To identify potential hazards and provide guidance to avoid accidents in crowded places.
  • Respiratory system efficiency improvement programs: To enhance endurance during walking and mobility.
  • Practical guidelines: These include tips for choosing the right shoes for long walks, and intensive awareness of ways to deal with heat stress and sunstroke, which are among the most prominent health challenges during the Hajj season.

Local and international impact of the initiative

The significance of this initiative extends beyond the local level to the international arena. Locally, it helps alleviate pressure on healthcare facilities and field hospitals during peak Hajj season through its proactive approach, which reduces emergencies. Internationally, it reflects the Kingdom's commitment to providing the highest standards of care for pilgrims and sets a global benchmark for the health management of large crowds and religious gatherings. These efforts align with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030, which aims to enrich the religious experience for Hajj and Umrah pilgrims and ensure their safety.

The Madinah Health Cluster explained that those wishing to benefit from this service can easily book appointments through the government’s “Sehhaty” application, as the service is available in selected primary health care centers, including the “Shuran” Center, the “Baqdou” Center, and the “Bani Salma” Center, as part of facilitating access to preventive health services for all pilgrims.
