Majed Abdullah criticizes Al-Nassr's performance and sends a message before the Al-Hilal derby
In statements that sparked widespread controversy in Saudi sports circles, Saudi football legend and former Al-Nassr star, Majed Abdullah , broke his silence to direct explicit messages to the management and players of “Al-Aalami” (the global club), coinciding with the team’s recent fluctuating results and the approaching date of the anticipated Riyadh derby against traditional rival Al-Hilal.
Technical analysis of the reasons for the decline
The legendary Saudi national team captain explained that Al-Nassr's recent draw against Al-Ettifaq cannot be considered a major loss given the difficulty of playing away from home. However, he emphasized that the real disaster lies in the team's loss of six crucial points due to defeats against Al-Ahli and Al-Qadisiyah. Majed Abdullah attributed this decline to significant absences that have severely impacted the core of Al-Nassr's squad, stating, "The reason for Al-Nassr's loss is the absence of Sadio Mane and Mohammed Simakan, who are considered the team's main attacking force. Their absence has greatly affected the team's performance, especially in attack and defensive balance.".
In a leadership gesture, the legend refused to hold goalkeeper Nawaf Al-Aqidi responsible for the decline despite the mistake he made, describing it as a normal mistake that can happen in the world of football, and calling for a focus on the collective system instead of individual mistakes.
Ronaldo: Between praise and criticism
In his remarks, Majed Abdullah addressed the topic of Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo, offering a balanced assessment of his current career. While praising Ronaldo's pivotal role in bringing the Saudi league into the global spotlight and drawing attention to sports in the Kingdom, he didn't hide his professional disappointment with the Portuguese player's recent dip in form. He said, "Ronaldo is a valuable player and continues to contribute on the field. We thank him for being the league's top scorer in previous seasons, but in his recent matches, particularly against Al-Qadisiyah, his performance has declined, and he hasn't provided the expected boost.".
The “Don’t Sleep” Message and the Riyadh Derby
Majed Abdullah delivered a strongly worded message to the players, saying, "I am deeply frustrated with what is happening at Al-Nassr because the mistakes keep repeating themselves. The league title is still up for grabs, and you must address your errors and not become complacent." These statements come at a crucial time, just before the derby match, which is considered the showcase of Saudi football.
Historically, Riyadh derbies between Al-Nassr and Al-Hilal are known to defy conventional technical predictions, with psychological factors and mental readiness playing a decisive role in determining the outcome. This match presents a golden opportunity for Al-Nassr to appease its fans and return to title contention, or it could be a devastating blow to its championship hopes if the mistakes warned against by the legendary Majed Abdullah are not addressed.
