Mecca: Intensive inspection tour to ensure the safety of slaughterhouses and markets during Eid al-Adha

As part of ongoing efforts to ensure the highest standards of public health and safety, Engineer Waleed bin Ibrahim Al-Daghis, Director General of the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture branch in the Makkah region, conducted a comprehensive field inspection tour. He was accompanied by his assistants, Engineer Hassan bin Ibrahim Al-Mu'idi and Engineer Hani bin Hamoud Al-Maimouni, and several other branch leaders, on the first day of Eid al-Adha.

The inspection tour included several slaughterhouses and public markets in the Holy City of Mecca, with the aim of monitoring compliance with health, environmental, and regulatory requirements. This vital step is crucial for assessing the progress of oversight and the services provided to beneficiaries and pilgrims, especially given the high operational density these facilities experience during the Hajj season and Eid al-Adha, when millions of Muslims flock to perform the rituals.

The tour focused on closely monitoring slaughtering operations at abattoirs, ensuring the application of strict veterinary inspection and health control procedures for all animals before and after slaughter, guaranteeing their suitability for human consumption. The tour also included public markets, where the availability, safety, and quality of food products were verified, ensuring they meet the needs of pilgrims to the Holy Mosque and residents of Mecca, and guaranteeing a healthy and safe environment for all.

Engineer Waleed Al-Daghis affirmed the continuation of round-the-clock monitoring and field efforts, emphasizing the mobilization of all available human, technical, and logistical resources to enhance performance efficiency and improve service quality. He also stressed the importance of coordination between field teams and relevant authorities to contribute to strengthening public health and safety during the Hajj season, one of the world's largest human gatherings.

These tours are of paramount importance given the unique status of Mecca as the heart of the Islamic world and a destination for millions of pilgrims annually. Maintaining public health and food safety in this holy city is not merely a local obligation, but a global responsibility that falls upon the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which places great importance on the comfort and well-being of the pilgrims. Historically, the Kingdom has made tremendous efforts to develop its infrastructure, health services, and regulatory framework to ensure a safe and convenient Hajj experience, as evidenced by the ongoing development of central slaughterhouses and markets.

These initiatives are part of the Kingdom’s ambitious Vision 2030, which aims to improve the quality of life and enhance services provided to pilgrims, including ensuring food, water, and environmental safety. Strict oversight of slaughterhouses and markets during peak seasons like Eid al-Adha is a cornerstone of achieving these goals, guaranteeing the availability of safe and healthy meat products and protecting consumers from any potential risks arising from non-compliance with health standards.

The anticipated impact of these inspection tours is multifaceted. Locally, they contribute to raising health awareness among merchants and consumers and improving the quality of products sold in the markets, which positively impacts the health of Makkah's residents and visitors. Regionally and internationally, the Kingdom's commitment to the highest safety standards enhances the confidence of Islamic countries in its ability to manage the Hajj efficiently and effectively, and underscores its commitment to protecting the health of pilgrims from around the world, thus preventing any potential disease outbreaks in the region and globally.

These field visits confirm the commitment of the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture, in cooperation with other government agencies, to ensure a healthy and safe environment for all, and embody the keenness of the wise leadership to provide all means of comfort and reassurance to the guests of God, citizens and residents alike, while continuing to work diligently to achieve excellence in the services provided.
