Makkah Environment and Founder's University: A comprehensive plan for Environment Week 2026

In a move reflecting a deep commitment to achieving national sustainability goals, the Makkah Region branch of the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture held an important coordination meeting with King Abdulaziz University (the Founder's University). The meeting aimed to lay the foundation for unifying efforts and developing an integrated roadmap in preparation for launching the "Environment Week 2026" events, in an early step to ensure maximum efficiency and impact.
National context and green vision
These moves come within the context of the significant momentum witnessed by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia under its Vision 2030, specifically the Green Saudi Arabia initiative, which aims to increase vegetation cover, reduce carbon emissions, and combat desertification. Cooperation between government sectors and academic institutions is a cornerstone of this national strategy, as the Ministry seeks to transform environmental policies from mere theoretical plans into tangible realities that benefit citizens and residents, particularly in the Makkah region, which possesses unique religious and geographical significance requiring exceptional environmental care.
Turning academic expertise into practical solutions
The meeting focused primarily on how to leverage the scientific and research resources of the Faculty of Environmental Sciences at King Abdulaziz University. An agreement was reached to translate academic studies and research into practical initiatives that benefit the local community. Both parties discussed mechanisms for developing innovative and impactful events that move beyond conventional approaches and emphasize integrating environmental awareness as an integral part of daily life, thereby contributing to raising community awareness about the importance of preserving natural resources.
Early preparation to maximize impact
The early preparations for "Environment Week 2026" dominated the discussions. This advance planning aims to ensure the event reflects the Kingdom's stature and showcases its significant environmental achievements. Both parties aim to integrate the university's research capabilities with the ministry's implementation capacity to develop sustainable solutions to the environmental challenges facing the Western Region, thus guaranteeing the continued positive impact of these initiatives for years to come.
The importance of partnerships in environmental work
For his part, Engineer Waleed Al-Daghis, Director General of the Ministry's branch in the Makkah region, emphasized that successful environmental work cannot be achieved in isolation from effective partnerships with national centers of expertise. He explained that expanding cooperation with the governmental, private, and non-profit sectors is an urgent necessity to achieve significant progress in environmental protection and ensure the sustainability of its resources for future generations, in line with the ambitious aspirations of the wise leadership to make the Kingdom a global model in environmental conservation.
