The Holy City completes road and bridge maintenance for the Hajj season

Early preparations to serve the guests of God

As part of its early and intensive preparations to receive pilgrims, the Holy Capital Municipality continued implementing a comprehensive maintenance and rehabilitation program for pedestrian bridges, traffic bridges, and vital road networks in Makkah and the Holy Sites. This strategic step is part of the approved operational plans for the Hajj season, aimed at enhancing public safety, improving infrastructure efficiency, and ensuring smooth traffic flow on the main routes that experience high traffic volume during this great spiritual period.

The historical and strategic context of the development of Mecca

Historically, Saudi Arabia has placed great emphasis on developing the infrastructure in Mecca, as managing millions of pilgrims in a specific geographical area and within a short timeframe is one of the world's greatest logistical challenges. These current efforts align with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030, specifically the Guests of God Service Program, which aims to facilitate the hosting of more Umrah and Hajj pilgrims and provide high-quality services that enhance their spiritual experience and ensure their safety and security from arrival to departure.

Scope of work and scale of field achievement

On the ground, the Holy Capital Municipality oversees the maintenance and operation of a vast road network spanning over 11.3 million linear meters within the neighborhoods and streets of Mecca, in addition to 274,000 linear meters in the Holy Sites area. Furthermore, engineering and technical teams monitor the readiness of 143 bridges distributed between Mecca and the Holy Sites, enhancing traffic flow and improving safety for road users during peak Hajj season.

A comprehensive package of maintenance and technical services

The integrated package of maintenance and technical support services included a number of notable digital achievements, most notably:

  • Scraping and paving more than 47,986 square meters of damaged roads to renew their surface layer.
  • Implementation and renewal of 2,400 square meters of road marking paint to clarify lanes.
  • Treating and painting concrete elements with a total area exceeding 57,291 square meters, which contributes to improving the urban landscape and extending the lifespan of the bridges.
  • Installation and maintenance of 1,040 linear meters of metal and concrete safety barriers.
  • Maintenance of the expansion joints of bridges with a length of 257 linear meters to ensure their flexibility and ability to withstand heavy loads.
  • Installing 125 square meters of protective netting for the support bridges, as a preventive measure that supports safety standards and raises the level of operational readiness.

Enhancing road safety and regional and international impact

Regarding traffic safety work, efforts included the maintenance, renewal and replacement of 71 damaged traffic signs, the installation of 22 free-fall warning signs for bridges to avoid truck and bus accidents, in addition to the maintenance of 52 traffic reflectors to enhance night vision and clarify lanes.

The Secretariat affirmed that these ongoing field efforts not only have a local impact by facilitating the movement of Makkah residents, but also extend regionally and internationally. This advanced infrastructure ensures the smooth flow of millions of pilgrims arriving from all corners of the earth. Enhancing the readiness of the road and bridge network reflects the Kingdom's commitment to providing the best possible services to the guests of God, contributing to a safer and more seamless journey that allows pilgrims to perform their rituals with ease and peace of mind.
