The Makkah route in the Maldives: Facilitating the Hajj journey for pilgrims
In a move reflecting the deep-rooted relations between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Republic of Maldives, and embodying the Kingdom's commitment to providing the highest quality services to pilgrims, a delegation from the "Makkah Route" initiative arrived in the Maldives to a warm welcome, both from the public and officials. This visit marks the beginning of operational arrangements to facilitate the Hajj journey for Maldivian pilgrims during the 1446 AH season, laying the foundation for a smoother and more seamless Hajj experience.
Background and development of the “Makkah Route” initiative
The Makkah Route Initiative, launched by the Saudi Ministry of Interior in 2017, is a pioneering initiative under the "Guests of God Service Program," one of the executive programs of Saudi Vision 2030. Its primary aim is to transform the Hajj experience by streamlining entry procedures for pilgrims at their home airports. These procedures include issuing electronic visas, collecting biometric data (fingerprints), verifying health requirements, and tagging and sorting luggage. Upon arrival at King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah or Prince Mohammad Bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Madinah, pilgrims are transferred directly to dedicated buses to be taken to their accommodations, while their luggage is delivered to them by the relevant authorities, thus saving them the hassle of long waits at the airports.
The importance of the Maldives joining and its impact
With its official inclusion, the Maldives became the eighth country to benefit from this premium service, joining Pakistan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Morocco, Bangladesh, Turkey, and Côte d'Ivoire. While the number of Maldivian pilgrims may not be large compared to other countries, its inclusion in the initiative underscores the Kingdom's policy of expanding its services to encompass as many Muslims as possible worldwide, regardless of geographical or population size. Locally, Maldivian pilgrims will experience a direct positive impact, as these procedures will eliminate long waiting times and alleviate the physical strain of travel, particularly for the elderly and those with special needs, allowing them to focus more on the spiritual aspect of the pilgrimage.
Regional and international dimensions of the initiative
At the international level, the Makkah Route Initiative reinforces the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s position as a leader in crowd management and the provision of advanced logistical services during Hajj and Umrah seasons. It also presents a global model for international cooperation in facilitating cross-border travel and leveraging technology to serve humanitarian and religious objectives. The initiative’s success and continued expansion send a clear message about the Kingdom’s unwavering commitment to harnessing all its capabilities to serve pilgrims and transform their spiritual journey into an unforgettable experience of comfort and tranquility, aligning with the strategic goals of the ambitious Vision 2030.
