The first flights of the Makkah Route Initiative from Pakistan have arrived in Madinah
In a move reflecting the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's commitment to providing the highest quality services to pilgrims, the first flights carrying beneficiaries of the "Makkah Route" initiative from the Islamic Republic of Pakistan arrived at Prince Mohammad Bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Madinah. This flight departed through the initiative's dedicated terminal at Jinnah International Airport in Karachi, thus inaugurating this year's Hajj season for Pakistani pilgrims benefiting from this pioneering program.
Historical context and the initiative's connection to Saudi Vision 2030
The Makkah Route Initiative is one of the most important strategic initiatives launched by the Saudi Ministry of Interior as part of the Guests of God Service Program, a key executive program of Saudi Vision 2030.Launched in 1438 AH (2017 CE), this initiative has witnessed unparalleled success since its inception, serving more than 1,254,994 pilgrims to date. This step is part of the Kingdom's historic development in crowd management and facilitating Hajj rituals, moving from paper-based procedures and long waiting times at airports to a fully integrated digital system that allows pilgrims to complete all their procedures before departing their home countries.
Objectives and operational mechanism of the “Makkah Route” initiative
The initiative primarily aims to provide high-quality services to pilgrims from participating countries. These services include receiving pilgrims and facilitating their entry procedures in their home countries with ease and convenience. The process begins with collecting biometric data (fingerprints and photographs), issuing the Hajj visa electronically, and completing passport control procedures at the departure airport. All of this is done after verifying that all necessary health requirements are met.
One of the most distinctive features of this initiative is the baggage coding and sorting system, whereby pilgrims' luggage is labeled according to their transportation and accommodation arrangements within the Kingdom. Upon arrival at the Kingdom's airports, pilgrims proceed directly via designated routes to buses waiting to transport them to their accommodations in the Makkah and Madinah regions. Partner organizations then deliver their luggage directly to their hotel rooms, saving them the hassle of waiting and carrying bags.
Importance and impact: locally, regionally, and internationally
At the regional and international levels, this initiative reflects the soft power of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and its remarkable ability to leverage modern technology in managing the world's largest annual human gathering. The selection of Pakistan as a beneficiary country carries significant weight, given its status as one of the most populous Muslim-majority nations and its close historical and strategic ties with the Kingdom. Implementing the initiative there will greatly alleviate logistical burdens and enhance the comfort of Pakistani pilgrims, positively impacting their spiritual experience.
Integrating national efforts for the success of the initiative
This massive logistical success would not have been possible without the combined efforts of numerous government and private entities. The Ministry of Interior is implementing this initiative for the eighth year in close collaboration with the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Health, Hajj and Umrah, and Media. The General Authority of Civil Aviation, the Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority, the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA), and the General Authority for Endowments are also actively participating.
Furthermore, this is being implemented in collaboration with the Guests of God Service Program, the General Directorate of Passports, and in partnership with the digital partner (stc Group). This institutional synergy demonstrates the ability of Saudi Arabia's infrastructure to provide a globally recognized model for managing religious travel and tourism.
