The Makkah route streamlines arrival procedures for Ivorian pilgrims using smart technology

The Makkah Route Initiative: A qualitative leap in serving the pilgrims

As part of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s ongoing efforts to facilitate the Hajj pilgrimage, the baggage tagging service within the “Makkah Route” initiative has significantly streamlined the arrival procedures for pilgrims from the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire. This service utilizes advanced technological solutions to ensure that pilgrims’ luggage is transported directly from their departure airport to their accommodations in Makkah and Madinah, eliminating the need to wait for or collect it at arrival airports in the Kingdom. This greatly reduces time and effort and enhances the comfort of the pilgrims.

The service's mechanism of operation and its direct impact

A specialized team from the Makkah Route Initiative, in cooperation with Subul Company, electronically links pilgrims' luggage to their personal data, flight details, and precise accommodation locations. This process takes place at the departure airport, where unique barcodes are placed on each piece of luggage. Upon arrival at Saudi airports, the luggage is automatically sorted and directed to designated buses for transport to hotels, while the pilgrims smoothly board buses to their accommodations. This procedure not only expedites pilgrim movement within the airport but also enhances operational efficiency and reduces congestion in arrival halls.

The general context of the “Makkah Route” initiative

The Makkah Route Initiative is a pioneering initiative of the Ministry of Interior within the Guests of God Service Program, one of the key programs of Saudi Vision 2030. Launched as a pilot program in 2017, it has since been gradually expanded to include several countries. The initiative aims to streamline entry procedures for pilgrims arriving in the Kingdom at their home airports, including issuing e-visas, collecting biometric data, verifying health requirements, and tagging and sorting luggage. This allows pilgrims to travel directly from their home country to their accommodation in the Holy Land without undergoing any arrival procedures.

Strategic importance and international influence

The Makkah Route Initiative holds immense strategic importance for the Kingdom, reflecting its commitment to harnessing cutting-edge technologies to serve pilgrims and enhance their religious experience. Domestically, the initiative contributes to optimizing the management of the massive crowds the Kingdom receives annually. Internationally, it represents an innovative model of international cooperation to facilitate the movement of travelers and reinforces the Kingdom's positive image as a leader in organizing and managing Hajj and Umrah seasons. This year, the initiative is being implemented in seven countries: Pakistan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Morocco, Bangladesh, Turkey, and Côte d'Ivoire, underscoring its success and potential for global expansion.
