Launch of the Holy Sites Train: 2000 trips to transport two million pilgrims

The Holy Sites train has been launched to serve the pilgrims

The first train journeys of the Holy Sites Metro for the Hajj season commenced this morning, a strategic step aimed at serving pilgrims and facilitating their movement with ease and convenience between the holy sites, specifically between Mina, Arafat, and Muzdalifah. This vital step comes as part of an integrated and sustainable transportation system specifically designed to reduce traffic congestion and provide a safe and comfortable environment for pilgrims during their rituals, reflecting the wise leadership's commitment to harnessing all resources to serve the guests of God.

Huge capacity and record numbers

Saudi Railways (SAR) explained that the Al-Mashaaer train boasts exceptional capacity, making it one of the world's most efficient and advanced transportation systems. Each train can accommodate up to 3,000 passengers, with a maximum operating capacity of 72,000 passengers per hour in one direction.

SAR indicated that the operational plan for the current season aims to transport more than two million passengers. To achieve this ambitious goal, 2,000 precisely scheduled trips will be operated between nine main stations strategically located along the train route (three stations in Arafat, three stations in Muzdalifah, and three stations in Mina, culminating at the Jamarat facility), ensuring coverage of all major pilgrim gathering areas and facilitating the movement of pilgrims from Arafat to Muzdalifah.

Historical context and development of the transportation system in Hajj

Returning to the historical context and general background of the project, the Holy Sites Train officially entered service in 2010, representing a qualitative and historic leap in crowd management in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. In 2019, a Cabinet decision transferred responsibility for its operation and maintenance to the Saudi Railways Company (SAR), contributing to the unification of rail transport efforts, increased operational efficiency, and the implementation of the highest international safety standards.

SAR has confirmed the readiness of its fleet of 17 trains, after completing all comprehensive maintenance work and upgrading the signaling, communications and control systems to ensure a reliable and safe transport experience that matches the scale of the exceptional event.

Strategic importance and expected impact

The Al-Mashaaer Metro plays a pivotal role in enhancing traffic flow through direct coordination with security and service agencies. Among its most significant environmental and logistical contributions is the elimination of over 50,000 bus trips, which drastically reduces carbon emissions and preserves the pristine environment of the Holy Sites, aligning with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030 and the Saudi Green Initiative, which focuses on environmental sustainability.

Regionally and internationally, the successful operation of this train reflects the Kingdom's exceptional ability to manage the world's largest human gathering within a limited geographical area and a very short timeframe. The "Serving the Guests of God" program is one of the most important Vision 2030 programs, aiming to enhance services provided to pilgrims and Umrah performers. This leaves a profound and positive impact on Muslims coming from all corners of the earth and highlights the Kingdom's pioneering role in harnessing the latest technologies to serve Islam and Muslims.
