The Al-Mashaaer train: 290,000 pilgrims successfully transported from Arafat to Muzdalifah
The Al-Mashaaer train transports 290,000 pilgrims from Arafat to Muzdalifah in the third phase of the movement
Saudi Railways (SAR) announced the successful completion of the transportation of 290,000 pilgrims from the holy sites of Arafat to Muzdalifah, as part of the third phase (Movement C) of the Holy Sites Train. This vital stage of the Hajj journey was completed at 12:30 AM, demonstrating the high operational efficiency and complete readiness of the transportation system in serving the pilgrims.
This achievement adds to the series of successes achieved by the Holy Sites Train, with the total number of passengers transported on the train during its three completed journeys exceeding 604,000. SAR is preparing to launch the fourth journey of the Holy Sites Train at 1:00 AM, which will continue until 9:00 AM, transporting pilgrims from Muzdalifah to Mina, completing the Hajj rituals.
The Al-Mashaaer Train: A vital artery in the Hajj journey
The Holy Sites Metro is one of the most prominent mega-projects implemented by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to serve pilgrims and facilitate their performance of Hajj rituals. Hajj, the fifth pillar of Islam, requires the intensive movement of millions of pilgrims between the holy sites (Mina, Arafat, and Muzdalifah) within a very short timeframe. Historically, this movement posed a significant logistical challenge, relying primarily on buses and other vehicles, leading to severe traffic congestion, lengthy delays, and physical exhaustion for the pilgrims.
To overcome these challenges, the idea of the Holy Sites Train emerged as an innovative and sustainable solution. Launched in 2010, this electric elevated train connects the nine holy sites (three stations in Arafat, three in Muzdalifah, and three in Mina), spanning approximately 18 kilometers. The train boasts an enormous capacity, capable of transporting hundreds of thousands of pilgrims in just a few hours, significantly reducing travel time and providing a safe and comfortable environment for pilgrims.
The importance and impact of the Al-Mashaaer train in the Hajj system
The importance of the Holy Sites Train extends far beyond its role as a means of transportation; its impact encompasses multiple aspects on a local, regional, and international level. Locally, the train enhances Saudi Arabia's capacity to host increasing numbers of pilgrims year after year, highlighting its commitment to developing infrastructure and providing the best possible services to the guests of God. It also contributes to strengthening the Kingdom's positive image as a leading nation in managing massive crowds and organizing major events with high efficiency.
Regionally and internationally, the Al-Mashaaer Metro serves as a model for crowd management and mass transportation during major religious events. It ensures the safety and comfort of pilgrims and reduces the risks associated with overcrowding, reflecting the Kingdom's commitment to providing a safe and accessible Hajj experience for Muslims worldwide. This project directly contributes to achieving the goals of Saudi Vision 2030, which aims to increase the number of Umrah and Hajj pilgrims and provide them with world-class services, thus reinforcing the Kingdom's position as the heart of the Islamic world.
Saudi Railways (SAR) confirms that its operational plan for the Holy Sites Train during the current Hajj season includes more than 2,000 trips, aiming to transport over two million passengers throughout the Hajj period. These impressive figures reflect the significant effort and advanced technologies employed to ensure the smooth flow and safety of pilgrims at every stage of their spiritual journey.
