The Crown Prince discusses with Joseph Aoun the latest developments in Lebanon and the region
In a move reflecting Saudi Arabia's continued interest in Lebanon's stability, His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, received a telephone call from the Commander of the Lebanese Army, General Joseph Aoun. The call focused primarily on reviewing the latest developments in Lebanon and the region, and discussing ways to enhance security and stability in light of the current challenges facing Lebanon.
A call at a precise time
This contact comes at a highly sensitive time for Lebanon, which has been suffering from a prolonged presidential vacuum since the end of former President Michel Aoun's term in October 2022, in addition to an unprecedented economic and financial crisis that the World Bank has ranked among the worst in the world. Amid this complex landscape, the Lebanese military, under the leadership of General Aoun, stands out as one of the few pillars of the state that still enjoys broad trust across the political and popular spectrum, making it the primary safeguard for maintaining a minimum level of stability and preventing a descent into chaos.
The importance of stability in light of developments in Lebanon and the region
Historically, Saudi Arabia has played a pivotal role in supporting Lebanon's sovereignty and stability, from sponsoring the Taif Agreement that ended the civil war to providing economic and humanitarian aid over the decades. This direct communication between the Crown Prince and the Army Commander is seen as a clear message of support for the military institution and its national role. During the call, General Joseph Aoun expressed his deep appreciation for the Kingdom's supportive stances towards Lebanon and its ongoing efforts to establish peace in the region, which underscores the depth of relations between the two countries and their shared commitment to overcoming crises.
Regional dimensions and political messages
This contact cannot be separated from the broader diplomatic efforts led by the Kingdom in the region, aimed at de-escalating crises and promoting political solutions. Lebanon's stability is an integral part of the region's overall security, and any further deterioration in the Lebanese situation could have serious regional repercussions. Therefore, the talks between Prince Mohammed bin Salman and General Aoun carry dimensions that extend beyond Lebanese domestic affairs, reflecting a Saudi strategic vision aimed at protecting the region from further tensions and encouraging dialogue among Lebanese political forces to reach national solutions that will extricate the country from its successive crises.
