Background to the crisis and the pivotal Saudi role
This visit comes at a sensitive time for Sudan, which has been embroiled in armed conflict since the outbreak of fighting in mid-April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces. This conflict has created a widespread humanitarian crisis and displaced millions. Since the beginning of the crisis, Saudi Arabia has played a pivotal and leading role in mediating the conflict, with Jeddah hosting multiple rounds of talks between the warring parties under joint Saudi-American auspices, aimed at achieving a permanent ceasefire and facilitating the delivery of humanitarian aid.
The importance of the meeting and its regional impact
The meeting between the Crown Prince and the Chairman of the Sudanese Sovereignty Council holds strategic importance that transcends bilateral relations, given Sudan's crucial geopolitical location on the Red Sea and in the Horn of Africa. The Kingdom recognizes that Sudan's stability is a cornerstone of regional Arab and African security. These talks reaffirm Riyadh's commitment to continuing its diplomatic and humanitarian efforts. The Kingdom has not limited itself to political endeavors but has also established air and sea bridges through the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center to provide medical and food assistance to the brotherly Sudanese people, thereby enhancing the prospects for reaching peaceful solutions that end the humanitarian suffering and pave the way for a comprehensive political process.
