The city's health complex allocates 43 beds for heat stress treatment
Exceptional preparations to ensure the safety of pilgrims
As part of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's ongoing efforts to serve pilgrims, the Madinah Health Cluster has announced its full readiness to handle cases of heat exhaustion and sunstroke during the Hajj season. This proactive measure involves allocating 43 state-of-the-art hospital beds, strategically distributed across several hospitals, health centers, and seasonal sites in the region, to ensure rapid medical response and immediate healthcare for pilgrims.
Historical context and Saudi experience in crowd medicine
Historically, the Hajj season has been associated with significant climatic and logistical challenges, especially when it coincides with the summer months, which are characterized by high temperatures. Over the past decades, the Saudi Ministry of Health and other relevant sectors have accumulated extensive experience in what is known as "mass medicine," making the Kingdom a leading global authority in this field. Managing millions of pilgrims within a limited geographical area and timeframe requires meticulous planning, which explains the great emphasis placed on equipping dedicated rooms and beds for the immediate treatment of heat exhaustion, one of the most common medical conditions during this time of year.
Geographical distribution of beds allocated for heat stress
The Madinah Health Cluster explained that the geographical distribution plan for beds was carefully considered to cover all areas where pilgrims are concentrated, and the preparations included the following:
- Al Safia Urgent Care Center: 16 beds have been allocated, making it the largest health facility in terms of capacity for this purpose.
- Al-Haram Hospital: Equipping 6 beds to serve visitors to the Prophet’s Mosque and its surroundings.
- Hospitals and vital centers: Two beds have been allocated in each of Al-Salam Waqf Hospital, Uhud Hospital, the Health Control Center at Prince Mohammed bin Abdulaziz International Airport, and Najoud Emergency Center.
- Additional allocations: One bed allocated in each of King Fahd Hospital, Al Miqat Hospital, the main hospital at King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Medical City, the Haramain High-Speed Railway Station, and Bab Jibril Urgent Care Center.
- Seasonal centers: The facilities included Quba, Al-Salam, Al-Harrah Al-Gharbiyah, Bab Al-Majidi, Al-Awali, Al-Miqat Al-Mawsimi, Al-Hijrah Al-Mawsimi, and the seasonal land pilgrims center.
Importance and expected impact locally and internationally
Locally, this meticulous distribution helps alleviate the burden on major hospital emergency departments, ensuring smooth operations and the provision of care for other critical cases without delay. Regionally and internationally, these extensive preparations send a reassuring message to millions of Muslims worldwide, underscoring the Kingdom's unwavering commitment to achieving the goals of Vision 2030 related to facilitating the hosting of Umrah and Hajj pilgrims and providing them with the highest quality healthcare services.
An integrated health system and qualified field teams
The Madinah Health Cluster affirmed that this high level of preparedness is not limited to providing beds, but is part of an integrated system that includes enhancing medical readiness, providing advanced medical equipment, and deploying highly qualified field teams. This integration directly contributes to rapid intervention and management of heat-related cases throughout the Hajj season, providing comprehensive health services that ensure the safety and well-being of the pilgrims until their safe return home.
