Madinah: First self-driving bus launched to serve visitors to Quba Mosque

A pioneering step towards the future of transportation in the Kingdom

As part of Saudi Arabia's digital transformation and in line with the goals of Vision 2030, the Public Transport Authority, in cooperation with the Madinah Region Development Authority, announced the launch of a pilot program for the first autonomous shuttle bus (Robobus) to serve visitors to Quba Mosque. This initiative represents a significant leap forward in the public transport sector and underscores the Kingdom's leadership in adopting cutting-edge technologies to enhance the quality of life and serve pilgrims.

General context: Vision 2030 and sustainable transport

This ambitious project is a fruit of the Kingdom's Vision 2030, which aims to build a prosperous economy, a vibrant society, and an ambitious nation. The Vision's transportation and logistics pillar focuses on developing advanced and sustainable infrastructure and adopting smart transportation solutions to reduce traffic congestion, lower carbon emissions, and improve the mobility experience for both residents and visitors. The holy cities of Mecca and Medina are at the forefront of implementing these innovative technologies, given their religious significance, global standing, and the millions of visitors they receive annually.

Details of the experience and specifications of the smart bus

The self-driving bus operates using an integrated system of artificial intelligence, advanced sensors, and high-resolution cameras, ensuring the highest standards of safety and security for passengers and pedestrians. The bus route is meticulously designed, extending 700 meters within the courtyard surrounding Quba Mosque, to facilitate the movement of worshippers and visitors between designated parking areas and mosque entrances. Trips depart from specific points for men and women, strictly adhering to a pre-planned route to ensure smooth traffic flow. The project's pilot phase will last for 60 days, during which the service's readiness will be assessed, its operational efficiency measured, and field data collected via precise digital maps to analyze the technology's performance and suitability to the surrounding environment before wider implementation.

The importance and expected impact of the project

The project holds particular significance on several levels. Locally, it enhances the religious and cultural experience for visitors to Quba Mosque, the first mosque built in Islam, by providing a modern, comfortable, and environmentally friendly means of transportation. It also reinforces Medina's position as a smart city and a leader in the application of future technologies. Regionally and internationally, this project highlights the Kingdom's efforts in localizing smart transportation technologies and places it among the leading nations in this field. The project's launch coincides with the designation of 2026 as the "Year of Artificial Intelligence," reflecting the Kingdom's strategic direction towards investing in the knowledge economy and advanced technologies, and presenting an inspiring model that can be replicated in other vital and historical sites around the world.
