Developing Madinah roads: 68,000 meters to serve pilgrims
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia continues its tireless and ongoing efforts to serve the pilgrims, a historical approach it has followed since its founding. In this context, the Municipality of Madinah has intensified its vital projects and initiatives to ensure a safe and comfortable Hajj journey for millions of Muslims arriving from around the world. These efforts are part of achieving the goals of Saudi Vision 2030, specifically the "Guests of God Service Program," which aims to bring about a qualitative leap in the Hajj and Umrah experience and facilitate their access to the Two Holy Mosques.
Details of the Madinah Roads Development Project
In preparation for the Hajj season of 1447 AH, the Municipality of Madinah announced the completion of a major project to develop roads and squares and improve the urban landscape, particularly in the central area surrounding the Prophet's Mosque. These strategic works included the development of vital roads totaling more than 68,000 meters in length.
The comprehensive development plan included the rehabilitation of several main routes, most notably: Al-Hussein Bin Ali Road, Sheikh Abdulaziz Bin Saleh Road, and Umm Al-Mu'minin Zainab Bint Jahsh Road. The work also extended to the development of Al-Salam Square and Uhud Avenue, forming an integrated service system primarily aimed at enhancing the quality of services provided to pilgrims and visitors and facilitating their movement and transportation with ease.
Improving the urban environment and humanizing cities
The efforts were not limited to paving roads, but also included the implementation of urban development and rehabilitation works covering a total area exceeding 67,000 square meters. In a move aimed at enhancing pedestrian safety and implementing urban humanization standards, modern sidewalks covering an area of more than 41,000 square meters were constructed, along with the allocation of similarly sized lanes for vehicles, which contributes to easing traffic congestion and facilitating smoother traffic flow during peak hours.
To enhance the aesthetic appeal befitting the sanctity and status of Medina, the project included the installation of 192 decorative lighting poles. As part of the Saudi Green Initiative and efforts to improve quality of life, 5,944 trees and 266 shrubs were planted, in addition to the creation of planting beds covering an area exceeding 5,500 square meters. These initiatives effectively contribute to moderating the climate, reducing carbon emissions, and improving the urban environment of the central area.
Strategic importance and expected impact
The development of Medina's roads is of paramount importance on several levels. Locally, the project contributes to raising the city's infrastructure standards, positively impacting the daily lives of residents and reducing traffic congestion. Regionally and internationally, this development reflects the Kingdom's readiness and exceptional ability to manage massive crowds and provide a safe and comfortable environment for the millions of Muslims who flock annually to perform Hajj and Umrah.
The Madinah Municipality confirmed at the end of its report that the benefits of these development projects are not limited to the logistical aspect only, but also contribute to providing a comfortable and beautiful environment that facilitates the movement of pilgrims and visitors, and enriches their religious and cultural experience during their stay in the city of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, leaving a good impression and an unforgettable memory in the hearts of the guests of God returning to their countries.
