Minister of Information sponsors agreements for developing press institutions and digital transformation
In a move aimed at reshaping the media landscape in Saudi Arabia, Minister of Media Salman bin Yousef Al-Dossari presided over the signing ceremony for a package of strategic partnership agreements, marking the launch of the first phase of the National Program for Developing Press Institutions. The ceremony was attended by a distinguished group of dignitaries and heads of government agencies, along with leaders from the private sector and chairmen and editors-in-chief of national newspapers.
The context of digital transformation and keeping pace with global changes
This initiative comes at a time when the global media sector is undergoing radical transformations, with print journalism facing existential challenges that necessitate a complete shift towards sustainable digital models. The program launched by the Ministry aims to empower established media institutions to modernize their traditional business models and enhance their technological readiness to compete in the rapidly evolving digital landscape. This step is crucial for preserving the journalistic legacy of Saudi institutions while infusing them with new energy through modern tools, thus ensuring their continued role as leading platforms in shaping opinion and news.
Details of partnerships and signed agreements
The ceremony included the signing of several significant memoranda of understanding between the public and private sectors and media organizations. A notable agreement was signed between the Madinah Region Development Authority and the Madinah Press and Publishing Foundation to enhance specialized media content serving visitors and residents of the region. Simultaneously, the Saudi Tourism Authority signed a memorandum with the Asir Press and Publishing Foundation (Al-Watan Newspaper), a complementary step aimed at supporting the Kingdom's growing tourism sector through professional promotional media content reaching a broad audience.
Investing in human and technological capital
Recognizing that development encompasses not only technology but also human resources, the Saudi Media Academy signed memoranda of understanding with Al-Madina, Al-Watan, and Makkah newspapers. These agreements focus on training, professional development, and the exchange of expertise to ensure the availability of qualified national talent to lead the new media landscape in line with the goals of the Kingdom's Vision 2030. Additionally, Trend Media has joined as a digital partner and sponsor for the first phase, providing strategic consulting and innovative technological solutions to help newspapers diversify their revenue streams and build sustainable revenue models.
Expected impact and future of the sector
These agreements are expected to contribute to creating a more competitive and professional media environment, with the program being implemented under the supervision and monitoring of the General Authority for Media Regulation. This phase marks the beginning of anticipated regulatory and legislative reforms, including the issuance of the new media law, which will enhance the financial and operational sustainability of media institutions and solidify the Kingdom's position as a leading media hub in the region, capable of exporting high-quality content that reflects the comprehensive development the country is experiencing.
