Ministry of Defense: Drone targeting Shaybah oil field in the Empty Quarter intercepted

The official spokesman for the Saudi Ministry of Defense, Brigadier General Turki Al-Maliki, announced that the Royal Saudi Air Defense Forces successfully intercepted and destroyed a booby-trapped drone in the Empty Quarter region, which was heading towards the strategic Shaybah oil field, in an attempt to target the Kingdom’s energy infrastructure.

Al-Maliki explained that the joint forces, thanks to God, and then thanks to the efficiency of the defense systems and continuous vigilance, were able to detect the hostile aerial threat and deal with it according to the approved rules of engagement, which led to the destruction of the drone before it reached its target, without any human or material damage, praise be to God.

The strategic importance of the Shaybah oil field

This failed attack has once again drawn attention to the Shaybah oil field, one of the world's most important and prominent giant oil fields. Located in the heart of the Rub' al Khali desert, amidst towering sand dunes and extremely challenging terrain, the field is hundreds of kilometers from the nearest populated area. A marvel of engineering and industry, the field produces vast quantities of high-value, extra-light Arabian crude oil and includes vital facilities for processing gas and natural gas liquids, making it a cornerstone of Saudi Aramco's energy production system.

Protecting global energy security

Attempts to target vital facilities and civilian infrastructure, such as the Shaybah oil field, not only target the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and its national assets, but also constitute a direct threat to the security of oil exports and the stability of global energy supplies, and consequently, a threat to the global economy as a whole. The Kingdom has repeatedly affirmed that these hostile acts contravene all international laws and norms and necessitate a firm stance from the international community to deter those who stand behind and finance them.

Kingdom's defense readiness

The successful interception in a remote and rugged area like the Empty Quarter demonstrates the advanced capabilities and high readiness of Saudi air defense systems, and their ability to protect the Kingdom's airspace and vital installations under all circumstances. The Ministry of Defense emphasizes that it will take all necessary and deterrent measures to protect its territory and national assets, and to safeguard global energy resources from any cowardly terrorist attacks, thereby preserving regional and international security and stability.
